Disc apparatus.-A machine for grinding cutters &c. is provided with automatic mechanism for moving the cutter teeth along the grinding- disc and for giving the cutter a step-by-step rotation to bring a fresh set of teeth in position for grinding. In the machine shown the grinding- disc 2, mounted in adjustable bearings on a fixed bracket 3 of a frame 1, acts on cutters 18 strung on a spindle 17 of a rotatable chuck 19. The chuck is mounted on a sliding table 7 reciprocated by helical guides 10 on a rotating drum 8. A ratchet-wheel 20 on the chuck is normally engaged by a pawl 21 to hold the work against rotation, but when the table 7 has nearly reached the end of its stroke to the right, a screw 25 on the pawl 21 comes in contact with an abutment 26 on the worm-wheel 13, thereby releasing the pawl and the chuck. To rotate the cutters one step at this stage, a second ratchet-wheel 28 on the chuck has a spring pawl (not shown) actuated through a series of levers, the last of which has a roller 34, which comes in contact with a stationary cam 35 on the frame. When the table is near the end of its travel, this system rotates the chuck sufficiently to bring the next set of teeth into position.
