Abstract

Rudders.-The rudders of submarines and other water craft are acted on by smaller rudders placed in front of the main rudders. Fig. 1 shows the main rudder A of a ship with forwardly-extending arms d, f carrying a smaller rudder a which is adjusted about its axis by the pilot so that the pressure thereon effects the adjustment of the main rudder. The gearing for adjusting the rudder a may be arranged within the hollow axis C and arms d, f of the main rudder or may be placed alongside them, and may consist of bevel, chain, eccentric, or other gearing actuated by pneumatic, hydraulic, or other means. When the motion of the vessel is reversed, the rudders are set free from the gearing so that they automatically take up the position with the smaller rudder foremost in the new direction of motion. The two rudders may be so connected by gearing as to facilitate their automatic return to the normal position when deflected by a side sea. Fig. 25 shows the invention applied to a jury rudder.
