158,343. Maddick, H. Oct. 31, 1919. Coupling.-A rope grip, clamp, or coupling comprises blocks a, b, Figs. 1 and 4, the interfaces c, d of which are inclined as shown. The blocks are grooved at e, f and are connected by two bolts passing through oblong holes. As the bolts are tightened, the portions a, b slide on each other in the direction of the ropes, reducing the cross-sectional area of the recess formed by the grooves between the blocks and thus gripping the ropes. A modification has the sloping interfaces transverse to the ropes. Fig. 7 shows a double-ended coupling, in which the upper blocks a<1>, a<2> slide in opposite directions on a common base b<1>. A double-ended coupling suitable for use on aerial ropeways is shown in Fig. 9. Upper blocks a<3>, a<4> are dovetailed into a common lower block b<2> by means of lugs c<3>, d<3>, Fig. 11. A screw n forces a wedge m between the blocks a<3>, a<4>, driving these outwards and consequently towards the base b<2>, thus gripping the ends of both ropes.
