Description

(54) A FRAMED PANEL MEMBER (71) We, SKOUHUS & JUNGE A/S, of Industrivej 9, 8450 Hammel, Denmark, a company organized under the laws of Denmark, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a door or panel comprising a central plate element mounted in an outer frame extending completely around the periphery of the plate element.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a door or panel comprising a single plate element mounted in a frame extending completely around the periphery of the element, the frame comprising a plurality of unitary frame members, adjacent frame members having mitre joints at the corners of the door or panel, each frame member abutting the plate element and having a tongue and groove connection with the corresponding edge of the element, the groove of the connection being formed in the edge of the element, wherein at least one surface of each frame member adjacent the plate element has a non-planar profile.
Some embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly in section showing a known door, Figure 2 is a perspective view partly in section showing a door according to the invention, and Figures 3-5 are sectional detail views illustrating other embodiments of the invention.
The known door 2 shown in Figure 1 comprises a panel or plate element 4 and a frame 6. The panel element 4 consists of a chipboard base plate member 8, the edges of which are provided with solid wooden fillets 10 secured by glueing and having just the same thickness as the chipboard plate 8.
The opposed surfaces of the joined chipboard plate and fillet members are provided with respective layers 12 of wooden veneer of the same sort of wood as the fillets 10, and the resulting plate element has been subjected to a cutting operation whereby the fillets 10 are made generally wedge shaped in such a manner that the edges of the veneer layers 12 are cut flush with the inclined surfaces of the fillets. The outer thin edge portions of the fillets 10 are received in holding grooves in the inner edges of solid wooden framing elements 14 forming the frame 6. Usually both the fillets 10 and the framing elements 14 are joined in mitre at the respective corners of the structure. This, however, requires careful cutting of the fillets 10 to suit the lengths of the respective edges of the base plate member 8 and a subsequent careful wedge cutting of the edge portions of the individual panel elements. The elements should be veneered individually between these cutting operations.
The door 16 showr. in Figure 2, is however, relatively simple to produce. A panel or plate element, here designated 18, consists of a simple chipboard plate 20 provided with layers of wooden veneer 22 at both sides thereof and with a peripheral groove 21.
The need for intermediate fillet 10, Figure 1, is entirely obviated, and the edges of the panel element are joined directly to foflr unitary outer frame boards or members 24 having mitre joints at the corners and each having an inner tongue portion 26 to be received in the panel groove 21. The frame board members are each cut from a fillet machined so as to have a surface portion 28 adjacent the panel element. The profiled surface has a steeply sloping portion and a gently sloping portion and the latter portion is contiguous with the panel element sur face. The door is thus easily formed using the panel element 18 which may be cut from a large, already veneered plate member and four frame boards cut from a machined board length.
In Figure 3 is shown a modified panel door member 30 having an external rebate 32 adapted to cooperate with the edge of a door opening of a cabinet or a cupboard.
The profiled surface 28 is formed at one side only.
As shown in Figure 4 the frame boards may have any complex configuration, and the joints between the frame boards 34 and the element 18' may comprise a loose connection element 36 inserted into edge grooves in the panel element and the respective frame boards.
As shown in Figure 5 the frame boards 38 may be provided with a groove 40 receiving an edge wall portion 42 of a groove 46 in a panel element 18". The panel element 18" is provided with an edge fillet 44 through which the edge groove 46 projects onto the outer edge of the panel element.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A door or panel comprising a single plate element mounted in a frame extending completely around the periphery of the element, the frame comprising a plurality of unitary frame members, adjacent frame members having mitre joints at the corners of the door or panel, each frame member abutting the plate element and having a tongue and groove connection with the corresponding edge of the element, the groove of the connection being formed in the edge of the element, wherin at least one surface of each frame member adjacent the plate element has a non-planar profile.
2. A door or panel, according to claim 1, wherein the tongue of each tongue and groove connection is integral with the associated frame member.
3. A door or panel according to claim 2, wherein each frame member has a groove adjacent the tongue which groove receives a peripheral portion of the element adjacent the groove in the element.
4. A door or panel according to claim 1, wherein the tongue of each tongue and groove connection is separate from the associated frame member and fits in a groove in the frame member.
5. A door or panel according to any of claims 1 to 4. wherein the surface of the profile of each frame member is contiguous with the surface of the element.
6. A door or panel according to any of claims 1 to 5. wherein the surface of the profile of each frame member has a generally V-shape and comprises a steeply sloping portion and a gently sloping portion.
7. A door or panel constructed and arranged substantially as herein described with reference to any of Figures 2 to 5 of the accompanying drawings.

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
