Description

(54) RACKET (71) I, GUNNAR PER MAGNUS SSON, a Swedish Subject of Folkungagatan 136, S-i 1630 Stockholm, Sweden, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent 'may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a racket having a head with a playing surface built up by crossing strings fastened to a flame, one set of which strings runs substantially in the longitudinally direction of the head and a second set of which runs substantially in the transverse direction thereof; for example a tennis racket.
In a conventional tennis racket the longi tudinal strings are shorter the farther away from the longitudinal centre line of the head they are placed and in consequence deteriorates outward of the centre and it is desirable to correct this.
According to the present invention this desideratum is achieved by the provision of a racket with a head having a playing surface built up by crossing strings fastened to a flame, one set of which strings runs substantially in the longitudinal direction of said head and a second set of which runs substantially in the transverse direction of said head, wherein the straight line length of at least some of the long itudinal strings of a longitudinal centre portion of the playing surface is greater the farther away from the longitudinal centre line of the racket head they are placed and said straight line length extends beyond the said playing surface.
The invention will be more fully understood from the following description given by way of example only with reference to a tennis racket illustrated on the single figures of the accom panying drawing.
The tennis racket of the drawing comprises a handle 1 which is joined to a frame 2 to which orthogonally crossing strings 3 and 4 are fastened for the formation of two substantially identical playing surfaces limited towards the racket throat by a throat piece 5 having an arched rear surface 5A provided with eight through bores each for a longitudinal string which bores have a diameter that is greater than the diameter of the strings that pass through them. The fastening points of the longitudinal strings of a longitudinal centre portion of the playing surface of the head are arranged at the said arched rear surface 5A of said throat piece 5. The other longitudinal strings 3 pass via aligned bores in the throat piece 5 and the frame 2 or they can be fastened to the arched front surface of the throat piece.
By means of the arched rear surface 5A of the throat piece 5 some of the longitudinal strings on either side of the two strings 3A, 3B in the middle on either side of the longitudinal centre line YY1 receive a successively greater straight length the farther away from said centre strings at the longitudinal centre portion of the playing surface they are placed. For example the straight length Q-1 or string 3C is greater than the straight length Q-2 of string 3D and it extends beyond the oval area of the playing surface delimited by the inner oval line of the frame 2 and throat piece 5.
Clearly the lengthening of the strings may be applied to the remaining longitudinal strings if required.
The strings may be arranged in groups of two in which case the lengthening of the strings may be made between each pair only the longer further from the centre line of the playing surface than the shorter.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A racket with a head having a playing sur face built up by crossing strings fastened to a frame, one set of which strings run substantially in the longitudinal direction of said head and a second set of which runs substantially in the transverse direction of said head, wherein the straight line length of at least some of the longi tudinal strings of a longitudinal centre portion of the playing surface is greater the farther away from the longitudinal centre line of the racket head they are placed and said straight line length extends beyond the said playing surface.
2. The racket according to claim 1, wherein the ends adjacent to the racket throat of the longitudinal strings of said longitudinal centre portion are fastened to a shaped throat piece.
3. The racket according to claim 2, wherein said throat piece is provided with through bores for receiving said longitudinal strings the diameter of which bores is greater than the diameter of said strings.
4. A racket constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described and as
