Description

(54) OSTOMY DEVICE (71) 1, JOHN BRINCK, of Danish na tonality of Hotel Marina 295t) Vedbaek.
Denmark. do hereby declare the invention.
for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and bv the following statement: The invention relates to an ostomy device, for example a device which can be used by persons who have undergone surgery for colostomy ileostomy and ureterostomy operations.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided an ostomv device comprising a bushing having a first flange adapted to receive a container. and a second flange secured to or integral with the front face (as considered in use) of a self-adhesive flexible skin for removable application to the skin surrounding a stoma or a user who has undergone an ostomy operation.
The flexible skin may be of polyvinyl chloride. The bushing may be made of polyvinyl chloride.
The bushing may be secured by 'veldine, for example high frequencv welding. directly to the flexible skin. Alternatively, the bushing may be glued directly to the flexible skin, for example by using a suitable solvent adhesive.
There may be a backing strip. which may comprise a silicone-coated backing paper.
initially masking the adhesive of the flexible skin.
According to a second aspect. the inven tion provides an ostomy device as hereinbe- fore described and an ostomy container mounted on the first flange for receiving faeces andior uiinc.
One construction embodvin e the invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example. in the accompanying dra\vins, in which: Figure I shows an exploded perspective view of one embodiment of the ostomv device; Figure 2 shows a sectional view of the device of Figure 1;and FiglzreJ 3a and 3b show respective front and rear views of a second embodiment of the ostomy device.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the ostomy device I shown comprises a polyvinyl chloride bushing 2 having a large second flange, aL cylindrical bodv and a smaller resilient or first flange 3. The large flange of the bushing 2 is secured as by welding or glueing to the front face (as considered in usei of a self-adhesive highly flexible PVC skin 4. The skin 4 has an adhesive layer (not shown) on the rear (as considered in use). side only, which is masked by a removable backing strip 5 in the form óf a silicone-coated backing paper.
There is a 1 hole 6 in each of the skin and back . ear which holes are aligned with the hole through the bushing.
In use. the backing paper 5 is removed from the skin 4 as by peeling. and the device 1 is offered up to a stoma of a user that the stun-a enters the bushing and the skin is prcssed into contact with the user's skin. An ostomy container such as a thin flexible synthetic plastic bag is secured to the flange *3 either before or after application to the user's skin. It can be held n place in the flange using suitable means such as a rubber band.
Referring now to Figures 3o and 3/). the ostomv device shown is similar to that of Figures I and 2 and like parts are therefore identified bv the same reference numerals.
The skin i has a crease or fold line 4() impressed in it and the backing paper has means for facilitating its removal. in the form of a perforation . > () which extends across the device and is aligned with the fold line 4(). When the device is to be applied to a person around a stoma. the skin 4 is folded about the line 4() to break the perforation 50 and so exposing edges 51 of the backing sheet 5 so that it can be easily peeled off the self-adhesive layer. The device is then pressed in place, the remaining part 52 of the backing strip being peeled off before the edge which it masks is stuck down. In this way, the adhesive property of the selfadhesive layer is maintained and is not impaired by handling by a person applying the device around a stoma.
In both embodiments, the highly flexible skin 4 moulds itself to the skin of the user surrounding the stoma. Leakage particular of semi-liquid faecal matter, is thus prevented and the waste matter from the user can pass from the stoma through the bushing into the bag.
The bag can be of any suitable kind, and it will be understood that it can be changed as desired without removal of the ostomy device 1 from the skin of the user since the device itself does not have to be removed.
It will be understood that the invention may take other forms than that shown in the drawings and above described. for example it is possible to form the skin 4 and bushing 2 in one. integral, piece. in every embodiment, the skin 4 has a much greater surface area than that of the large flange of the bushing 2 so that there is a relatively larger surface area of skin 4 than that of the area immediately around the stoma to which the device is secured in use.
Also, several of the devices can be formed together along a marginal edge to form a chain or sheet from which a single device can be separated as desired, as bv tearing a perforation between adjacent devices.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. An ostomv device comprising a bushing having a first flange adapted to receive a container. and a second flange secured to or integral with the front face (as considered in use) of a self-adhesive flexible skin for removable application to the skin surrounding a stoma of a user who has undergone an ostomv operation.
2. An ostomy device according to Claim 1. in which the bushing and flexible skin are integral and formed in one manufacturing step.
3. An ostomy device according to Claim 1. in which the bushing and flexible skin are directly secured together by welding.
4. An ostomy device according to Claim in in which the bushing and flexible skin are directlv secured together by glueing.
5. An ostomv device according to any preceding Clam. including a removable backing strip masking the adhesive surface of the flexible skin.
6. An ostomy device according to Claim 5. comprising a silicone-coated backing paper.
7. An ostomy device according to Claim 5 or Claim 6, including means to facilitate removal of the backing strip.
8. An ostomy device according to Claim 7, the means comprising a perforation in the backing strip and an aligned crease or fold line in the skin.
9. An ostomy device according to any preceding Claim comprising a polyvinyl chloride skin.
10. An ostomy device according to any preceding Claim, comprising a flexible polyvinyl chloride bushing.
11. An ostomy device, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in Figures 1 and 2 or Figures 3a and 3b of the accompanying drawings.
12. An ostomy device according to any preceding Claim, including an ostomy container mounted on the first flange for receiving faeces and/or urine.
