Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO GLAZING DEVICES (71) We, WAVIN B.V., a Dutch Corporate body, of 251, Handellaan, Zwolle, The Netherlands, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to glazing devices.
In Figure 5 of our Patent Specification No.
1,455,135, to which reference is hereby directed, there is shown a glazing device comprising a frame member receiving a pane, a facing member extending over the frame member on one side of the pane and retaining members retaining the facing member on the frame member with a first edge portion of the facing member adjacent the pane. The facing member has a downwardly directed portion which is engaged with a snap-fit with an upwardly directed portion of each respective retaining member, and the facing member extends from the first edge portion over the frame member and terminates in a second, inwardly directed edge portion which is accommodated in a longitudinal groove in the frame member.
A disadvantage of this device is that when the facing member is formed of a resilient material the device presents a security risk because the facing member can be removed to allow the pane to be removed and later repositioned without leaving any trace of removal.
An object of the present invention is to enable this disadvantage to be overcome.
The invention includes a glazing device comprising a frame member for receiving a pane a facing member adapted to extend over the frame member on one side of the pane and retaining members for retaining the facing member on the frame member with a first edge portion of the facing member adjacent the pane, said facing member having a downwardly directed portion adapted to engage with a snap-fit with an upwardly directed portion of each respective retaining member, and said facing member, in use, extending from said first edge portion over said frame member and terminating in a second, inwardly directed edge portion which is accommodated in a longitudinal groove in the frame member, said groove having a restricted opening and said second edge portion having a projection for preventing the second edge portion from being withdrawn through the restricted opening without damaging said glazing device.
The invention also includes a facing member as defined in the preceding para- graph for forming a glazing device with the frame member and retaining members defined in that claim.
In order that the invention may be well understood, an embodiment thereof, which is given by way of example only, will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a partial crosssection of a glazing device with a glass pane mounted therein.
The illustrated glazing device comprises a polyvinylchloride frame member 1 which receives a glass pane 3, a facing member 16 which extends over the frame member on one side of the pane and retaining members 5 (only one of which is shown) which are spaced apart along the periphery of the pane and retain the facing member 16 on the frame member 1 with an edge portion 25 of the facing member adjacent the pane.
The pane 3 is supported between a portion 2 of the frame member 1 and an upwardly directed portion 8 of each retaining member 5 through intermediate sealing strips 4 and 9 respectively.
The retaining members each have a hookshaped projection 10 which engages behind a projecting edge 11 of the frame member portion 2 such that the retaining members cause the pane to be pressed against the strip 4.
The projections 10 are formed of a resi lient material such that the retaining members 5 are able to be fitted by sliding their bases 6 along the horizontal surface 7 of the frame member until the projections engage with a snap-fit behind the edge 11 and remain so engaged because of the resilience of the material. Each retaining member is provided with a lip 12 beneath the hookshaped projection 10 to prevent tilting of the retaining member about the tranverse edge 13 of the base.
The facing member 16 has a downwardly directed portion 20 which is adapted to engage with a snap-fit an upwardly directed portion 22 of each retaining member. To this end the portion 22 is resilient and is formed with a recess 23 for receiving a corresponding projection 24 on portion 20 of the facing member with a snap-fit. As illustrated the downwardly directed portion 20 of the frame is located between the resilient upwardly directed portion 22 and the other upwardly directed portion 8 of the retaining members.
Portion 8 is made more rigid than portion 22 because it acts to support the pane 3.
At its edge portion 25 adjacent the pane, the facing member 16 is provided with a sealing lip 21 which is accommodated in a recess in the edge portion 25 and is more resilient than the facing member for sealingly engaging the pane as illustrated. The drawing also shows in dotted line the position of the free end of the lip 21 in an undeflected position.
The lip 21 is preferably formed of rubber whereas the facing member is formed of a plastics material preferably polyvinylc hloridc.
The facing member 16 extends from its edge portion 25 over the frame member 1, covering the retaining members 5, and terminates in a second edge portion 15 which is directed inwardly. The edge portion 15 is accommodated in a longitudinal groove 14 in the front or outside, face of the frame member 1. The groove 14 is provided with a restricted opening 19 and the edge portion 15 has a projection 17 which prevents the edge portion from being withdrawn in through the opening without damaging the glazing device. The projection 17 is arranged to snap-fit into the groove 14 through the restricted opening and as illustrated the projection 17 is upwardly directed and the opening 19 of the groove is restricted by means of a downwardly directed projection 18.
It will be appreciated that the illustrated snap-fit arrangement of the edge portion 15 and the groove 14 prevents removal of the facing member from the frame member unless undue force. which would cause damage to the glazing device, for example by causing the facing member to crack, is used, and greatly facilitates fitting of the glazing device.
It is to be understood that directional terms such as 'upwardly' used in this specification are appropriate when the glazing device is in the illustrated orientation and that such terms should be construed accordingly.

2. A glazing device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the projection is arranged to snap-fit into said groove through said restricted opening.
3. A glazing device as claimed in claim 2, wherein said opening of said groove is restricted by means of a downwardly directed projection and said projection of said second edge portion is upwardly directed.
4. A glazing device as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the retaining members are each provided with a second upwardly directed portion for use in supporting a pane received in said frame member, the downwardly directed portion of the facing member being located in use between the two upwardly directed portions of each retaining member.
5. A glazing device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the retaining members in use cause a pane received in said frame member to be pressed against a sealing strip between the pane and a portion of the frame member on the side of the pane remote from the facing member.
6. A glazing device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the retaining members engage with a snap-fit behind a projecting edge of the frame member.
7. A glazing device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein said first edge portion of the facing member is provided with a recess adapted to accommodate a sealing lip which is more resilient than the facing member and which, in use, sealingly engages a pane received in said frame
