Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO ANIMAL FEEDSTUFF COMPOSITIONS (71 I, RGNALD ERNEST MUNDY, a British subject of Goldlay, Burnt Mills Road, Nevendon, Basildon, Essex, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to animal feedstuff compositions.
In accordance with the invention there is provided an animal feedstuff composition comprising an animal feedstuff and cement furnace flue dust.
Throughout this specification the term "feed- stuff" relates to any normal or usual feed for animals.
The cement furnace flue dust is usually extracted from the electro-static precipitators in the chimney stacks of cement works but may be obtained from the grates at the bases of these stacks. It has been found that this type of flue dust, when fed to animals, such as horses, cattle and chickens and other birds, in quantities of four to sixteen ounces per day, depending on the weight, size and splecies of animal, has a beneficial effect on the animals.
This effect is thought to arise from an alkaline or a calcium, and other trace element, content of the flue dust.
Also, it has been found that animals fed with this dust, which is generally mixed with their usual feed, undergo considerable gains in weight. In the case of horses, a marked improvement in relief from arthritis and other bone maladies has been found. Also, battery hens have shown a marked improvement in relief from cage cramp, rickets and the like.
Furthermore, oil-contaminated birds, such as gull, ducks and geese, whose plumage can be cleaned with this oil-absorbent flue dust, have been found to be eager to consume the flue dust in its oil-free state.
Two typical analyses of the composition of this flue dust are given below.
Composition S;iO2 13.6% Awl203 3.4 Foe208 3.3 CaO 52.6 SO, 2.9 S 1.1 CO, 19.7 Na2O 1.6 K2O 3.3 The loss on ignition of this particular flue dust composition was 27.9%, by weight, its Bulk Density in benzene being 0.42g/ml and its percentage fines passing B.S. Sieve No. 200 being 95.4%.
Composition SiO2 13.41% A1203 2.39% Fe203 2.30% CaO 51.30% SO, 2.92% S 1.01% CO2 20.95% Na2O 1.78% K20 3.97% The loss on ignition of this second flue dust composition was 26117%, its bulk density in benzene being 0.48g/ml and the percentage fines passing B..S. Sieve No 200 being 95.4%.
Preferably the flue dust is added in a dry state, preferably powdered, to the normal animal feedstuff. However, it may be added as a solution but this tends to give off an unpleasant aroma and is thought to deserve some of the beneficial trace elements present.
It will be appreciated that the composition of this cement furnace flue dust differs by certain amounts depending upon the conditions within the cement furnace itself, the height of the electro-static precipitators above the furnace and the overall operating conditions in the furnace.
Thus, it can be seen that the present invention provides an animal feedstuff composition which is cheap to obtain, it being basically a waste material, and which needs hardly any further treatment, if any, before being used ig normal animal feedstuffs.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. An animal feedstuff composition comprising an animal feedstuff and cement furnace flue dust.
2. An animal feedstuff composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the cement fumace flue dust is in a dry state when added to the animal feedstuff.
3. An animal feedstuff composition as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the cement furnace flue dust is in a powdered state when added to the feedstuff.
4. An animal feedstuff composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the cement furnace flue dust is in solution when added to the feedstuff.
5. An animaL feedstuff composition comprising an animal feedstuff and cement furnace flue dust substantially as hereinbefore described.
