Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO CORONA DISCHARGE ELECTRODES (71) We, STURTEVANT GAS CLEANING LIMITED, a British Company of Mallinson House, 321 Chase Road, Southgate, London, N. 14, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: - The present invention relates to corona discharge electrodes for use in electrostatic precipitation.
According to the present invention there is provided a corona discharge electrode for use in electrostatic precipitation, the electrode comprising an elongate supporting body provided with a longitudinally extending planar edge portion and a plurality of elements extending from the edge portion each element providing a corona discharge tip, wherein each element is connected integrally with the body along a line which intersects the longitudinal direction of the body, and each element is bent about the respective line out of the plane of the edge portion, adjacent elements being bent in opposite directions.
Preferably each element is triangular, one hase thereof extending along the respective line.
In the preferred embodiment, elements are formed by forming cuts in each edge portion which cuts are straight, parallel to each other, and inclined to the longitudinal direction of the body, and lines about which the elements are bent joining the opposite ends of adjacent cuts. Advantageously these lines are perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the body.
The present invention will be more fully understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a transverse section through an embodiment of electrode according to the present invention; Figures 2 and 3 are perpendicular side views of the electrode of Figure 1, and Figures 4 and 5 are views corresponding to those of Figures 2 and 3 of one end of the electrode of Figure 1.
The corona discharge electrode shown in Figures 1 to 5 comprises an elongate supporting body 1 made from a strip of steel which is shaped to provide the body with a longitudinally extending central stiffening portion 2 and coplanar longitudinal edge portions 3. The stiffening portion 2 is longitudinally corrugated to provide it with a transverse section having two oppositely directed channel-shaped parts. The electrode also comprises a plurality of triangular elements 4 each providing a corona discharge tip and extending from the edge portions 3 of the body 1.
The elements 4 are integral with the body 1 and are formed by making a plurality of inclined parallel cuts 5 along the edge of each portion 3. The parts defined by the cuts are integrally connected to the body 1 by, and are bent out of the plane of the edge portion about, lines 6 intersecting the longitudinal direction of the body 1 and joining opposite ends of adjacent cuts.
Adjacent parts are bent in opposite directions (Figures 1 and 3) and extend at angles to the plane of the edge portion, which angles are less than 90". In the illustrated embodiment, the lines 6 are perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the electrode It will however be appreciated that the lines 6 could be inclined to the longitudinal direction.
For mounting the electrode, at each end of the electrode the body is centrally cut away as shown in Figure 4 and the remaining portions 3 are provided with fixing holes 7 by which it can be connected to a part 8 (Figure 5) of a precipitator frame work.
The above described electrode is highly mechanically stable but is yet easy and cheap to make since it can be simply cold rolled and machine pressed from steel strip.
The above described electrode is also described and claimed in co-pending patent application No. 14429/76 (Serial No.
1575404).
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A corona discharge electrode for use in electrostatic precipitation, the electrode comprising an elongate supporting body provided with a longitudinally extending planar edge portion and a plurality of elements extending from the edge portion, each element providing a corona discharge tip, wherein each element is connected integrally with the body along a line which intersects the longitudinal direction of the body, and each element is bent about the respective line out of the plane of the edge portion, adjacent elements being bent in opposite directions.
2. An electrode according to claim 1, wherein each element is triangular, one base thereof extending along a respective line.
3. An electrode according to either claim 1 or claim 2, wherein each line extends perpendicular to the longitudinal edge of the body.
4. An electrode according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the elements are formed by forming cuts in the edge portion which cuts are straight, parallel to each other, and inclined to the longitudinal direction of the body, the lines about which the elements are bent joining one end of one cut to the other end of an adjacent cut.
5. An electrode according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein each element is bent out of the plane of the edge portion so as to extend at an angle to the plane of the edge portion, which angle is less than 90".
