Description

(54) BOOK JACKET BLANKS AND BOOK JACKETS (71) We, BOOK PROTECTORS & CO., a Company of unlimited liability registered under the laws of England of Protector House, 76 South Grove, Walthamstow, London E17 do hereby declare the inven tlon, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to book jacket blanks, and to book jackets made therefrom, suitable for use in covering books of a range of different sizes.
One size book jackets made of nonelastomeric plastics material are known, comprising a back sheet to extend over the front and back cover and spine of the book, and inner sheets welded or otherwise affixed to each of the lateral or side edges of the back sheet and to the longitudinal or top and bottom edges thereof to form pockets.
The inner sheets extend over only a portion of the area of the front and back book covers and form pockets with the back sheet to receive the said covers and thereby retain the jacket on the book. Such conventional jackets are suitable for both hard back and paper back books, but any one such jacket is useful only for books of one size or thereabouts. As books are made in large number of different sizes, such conventional jackets have had to be made in a number of different sizes. Book jackets made of elastomeric plastics material are also known, and have the advantage that a jacket of a given size can be stretched to fit books of a range of sizes. However, such jackets are generally suitable only for hard back books, because the tension of the elastomeric material, even when only slightly stretched, tends to buckle the covers of paper back books. Also, elastomeric plastics materials are often more expensive than the non-elastomeric materials. It is an object of the invention to provide preformed blanks which can be used to make covers for books in a range of dimensions.
According to one aspect of the present invention a book jacket blank comprises a back sheet having book front and book back covering portions, a first inner sheet extending over substantially the lateral dimension of one of said book front or book back covering portions and joined thereto at one longitudinal edge only thereof and a second inner sheet overlying the other of said book front or book back covering portion and joined thereto at one or more edges thereof, the back sheet and inner sheets being of non-elastomeric plas- tics material.
The second inner sheet may also extend from one edge of the said other portions, and the first and second inner sheets may extend from longitudinal edges of the book front or book back covering portions.
According to another aspect of the m- vention a book jacket blank comprises a back sheet having book front and book back covering portions, and two partial inner sheets together extending over substantially the lateral dimension of one of the book front and book back covering portions, one partial inner sheet being joined to the said portion or one longitudinal edge only thereof and the other partial inner sheet being joined to the said partial or the outer longitudinal edge only thereof, the back sheet and the partial inner sheets being made of non-elastomeric plastics material.
The jacket blank may comprise partial inner sheets extending inside the back sheet from the top and bottom longitudinal edges of the book front covering portion and of the book back covering portion.
The terms "book jacket blank" and "blank" are used herein to refer to preformed articles suitable for convenient location over the covers of books of a range of dimensions to be formed into a well fitting jacket thereon, the blanks having defined and claimed physical characteristics.
Blanks embodying the invention can be preformed in a number of different ways as will be seen, and each embodiment may require different treatment to form a jacket conforming to the dimensions of a particular book. Thus, the relationship of the physical characteristics of blanks and jackets formed therefrom may vary both with the way in which the blank is preformed with the dimenisons of book on which it is used and therefore the formed jacket may or may not have the said physical characteristics.
The term "longitudinal" is used herein to refer to the dimensions of the blanks which, when in position on a book will traverse the spine of the book. The "lateral" dimension is at right angles to longitudinal i.e. parallel to the spine.
The plastics material of at least the back sheet of the jacket blank is preferably transparent so that the book cover or a dust jacket thereon, will be visible through the plastics jacket.
Book jackets blanks embodying the in vention may be provided for convenient application to both hard back and paper back books, of given height and a variety of widths, or vice versa, or a variety of heights and widths, a close fit of the resulting jacket on a book being achieved by trimming an oversize blank to size and sticking the trimmed edges of the blank together e.g. by adhesive tape.
The blanks can have one preformed pocket formed by a second inner sheet or may be formed with one of configurations of our co-pending applications Nos. 49891/ 76 (Serial No. 1575013) from which this is divided and No. 7928100 (Serial No.
1575014).
Some book jackets blanks embodying the present invention and the formation of jackets therefrom will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1 and la are perspective and plan views respectively of a book jacket blank embodying the invention shown fitted on a book; and Figures 2 and 2a are corresponding views of further such book jacket blanks.
Referring to the drawings, each shows an opened book 10 comprising a block of pages 12 and front and back covers 13 and 14 respectively.
Each book 10 has fitted over it an adjustable book jacket blank 20-1 or 20-3, transparent non-elastomeric plastics sheet material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene. Each of the blanks 20-1 and 20-3 comprises a back sheet 22 extending over the full outer -area of the covers 13 and 14 and the spine between them, and at least two inner sheets joined at one or two of its edges to edges of the back sheet 22. The joined edges of the back sheet and the inner sheet or sheets are shown in the drawings by hatched lines.
The join may be a weld or other form of attachment of hitherto unjoined sheets, or may be a fold in single sheet.
Dealing with the embodiments in turn, Figures 1 and la show a blank 20-1 having two inner sheets 31 each joined at one longitudinal edge to the back sheet 22 as indicated by the hatched lines. The book covers 13 and 14 are disposed each between an inner sheet 31 and the back sheet 22 with edges of the covers 13 and 14 being closely adjacent the joined edges of the blank. The blank 20-1 is then cut through the inner sheets 31 and the back sheet 22 along lines indicated by the arrows A and B and the resulting cut edges are taped together (i.e. secured together by adhesive tape) to form a close fitting pocket about each of the covers 13 and 14.Another way of forming the close fitting pocket is to cut the back sheet 22 and the inner sheet 31 along the line B but to cut only the inner sheet 31 along the line A and fold the projecting marginal edge of the back sheet over the inner sheet 31 and tape it in place.
Alternatively, only the inner sheet 31 could be cut, along the lines A and B, and both the projecting marginal edges of the back sheet 22 folded over and taped in place.
Figures 2 and 2a show a blank 20-3 having four partial inner sheets 33 each joined at one longitudinal edge to the back sheet 22 as indicated. The book covers 13 and 14 are disposed each between two adjacent partial inner sheets 33 and the back sheet 22 with edges of the covers 13 and 14 closely adjacent the joins. The blank 20-3 is then cut through the inner sheets 33 and the back sheet 22 along lines indicated by the arrows D and the resulting cut edges taped together to form a close fitting pocket about each of the covers 13 and 14. Here also the inner sheets 33 only may be cut and the outer sheet folded over.
The embodiments of both Figures 1 and la, and 2 and 2a can be varied and formed with only one end of the blank 20-1 or 20-3 having an inner sheet 31 or only two partial inner sheets 33, - the other end being preformed in a pocket (not shown) being formed of an inner sheet joined to the blank at two longitudinal edges and an outer lateral edge.
It will also be appreciated that various combinations in a blank of the various above described ways of making pockets can be used. For example, instead of using adhesive tape to secure portions of the jacket blank together, appropriate areas of the blank could be coated with a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive or of adhesive material which is non-tacky but which will adhere to a correspondingly coated area of the blank when the two areas are brought together in face-to-face contact. It will again be appreciated that various combinations of the methods of sticking the covers together about the book may be used.
