Description

(54) BOOK JACKET BLANKS AND BOOK JACKETS (71) We, BOOK PROTECTORS & Co., a Company of unlimited liability registered under the laws of England of Protector House, 76 South Grove, Walthamstow, London, E17 do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to book jacket blanks, and to book jackets made therefrom, suitable for use in covering books of a range of different sizes.
One size book jackets made of nonelastomeric plastics material are known, comprising a back sheet to extend over the front and back cover and spine of the book, and inner sheets welded or otherwise affixed to each of the lateral or side edges of the back sheet and to the longitudinal or top and bottom edges thereof to form pockets. The inner sheets extend over only a portion of the area of the front and back book covers and form pockets with the back sheet to receive the said covers and thereby retain the jacket on the book. Such conventional jackets are suitable for both hard back and paper back books, but any one such jacket is useful only for books of one size or thereabouts. As books are made in a large number of different sizes, such conventional jackets have had to be made in a number of different sizes.Book jackets made of elastomeric plastics material are also known, and have the advantage that a jacket of a given size can be stretched to fit books of a range of sizes. However, such jackets are generally suitable only for hard back books, because the tension of the elastomeric material, even when only slightly stretched, tends to buckle the covers of paper back books. Also elastomeric plastics materials are often more expensive than the non-elastomeric materials. It is an object of the invention to provide preformed blanks which can be used to make covers for books in a range of dimensions.
According to the present invention a book jacket blank comprises a back sheet having book front and book back covering portions, a first inner sheet overlying one of the book front or book back covering portions and joined thereto at the longitudinal edges only thereof and a second inner sheet overlying the other of said book front or book back covering portions, and joined thereto at one or more edges thereof, the back sheet extending longitudinally beyond the outer lateral edge of the first inner sheet to form a tongue portion rebated at its top and bottom longitudinal edges such that it may be tucked under the adjacent first inner sheet, the back sheet and inner sheets being of non-elastomeric plastics material.
Book jacket blanks and book jackets of similar configuration ;are claimed in our co-pending application no. 49891/76 (serial no. 1575013) from which this application is divided.
The terms "book jacket blank" and "blank" are used herein to refer to preformed articles suitable for convenient location over the covers of books of a range of dimensions to be formed into a well fitting jacket thereon, the blanks having defined and claimed physical characteristics.
Blanks embodying the invention can be preformed in a number of different ways as will be seen, and each embodiment may require different treatment to form a jacket conforming to the dimensions of a particular book. Thus, the relationship of the physical characteristics of blanks and jackets formed therefrom may vary both with the way in which the blank is preformed and with the dimensions of book on which it is used and therefore the formed jacket may or may not have the said physical characteristics.
The term "longitudinal" is used herein to refer to the dimensions of the blanks which, when in position on a book will traverse the spine of the book. The "lateral" dimension is at right angles to longitudinal i.e. parallel to the spine.
The plastics material of at least the back sheet of the jacket blank is preferably transparent so that the book cover, or a dust jacket thereon, will be visible through the plastics jacket.
Book jacket blanks embodying the invention may be provided for convenient application to both hard back and paper back books, of a variety of widths, a close fit of the resulting jacket on a book being achieved by folding a tongue of an oversize blank over the adjacent edge of a book and tucking it under an adjacent inner sheet of the blank.
The second inner sheet of the blanks may be a preformed pocket such as in a conventional one size book jacket or may be one of the inner sheet configurations of our two-co-pending applications no. 49891/76 (Serial No. 1575013) from which this is divided and No. 7928101 (Serial No.
1575015).
Some book jacket blanks embodying the present invention and the formation of jackets therefrom will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1 and la - are perspective and plan views respectively of a book jacket blank embodying the invention shown fitted on a book; and Figure 2 shows a detail of a modification of the book jacket blank shown in Figures 1 and la.
Referring to the drawings Figures 1 and la show an opened book 10 comprising a block of pages 12 and front and back covers 13 and 14 respectively.
The book 10 has fitted over it an adjustable book jacket blank 20-5 of transparent non-elastomeric plastics sheet material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyester, polyethlene Or polypropylene. The blank 20-5 comprises a back sheet 22 extending over the full outer area of the covers 13 and 14 and the spine between them, and two inner sheets 35 and 40 joined by two and three respectively of its edges to edges of the back sheet 22. The joined edges of the back sheet and the inner sheet or sheets are shown in the drawings by hatched lines.
The join may be a weld or other form of attachment of hitherto unjoined sheets, or may be a fold in a single sheet.
The book cover 13 is disposed partially in the pocket 40 and the book cover 14 is disposed between the inner sheet 35 and the back sheet 22 with edges of the cover 14 closely adjacent the joins. The back sheet 22 has a tongue portion 23 extending beyond the side edge of the cover 14 which is folded over that edge along the -broken line indicated by the arrow F and tucked under the inner sheet 35 to form a close fitting pocket about the cover 14. The edges of the back sheet 22 and the tongue portion 23 are rebated from the - outer edge of the inner sheet 35 to avoid any need for cutting or folding along of the tongue 23 to fit under the inner sheet 35 without buckling.
A piece of double sided adhesive tape 24 may be provided on the outer side of the tongue portion 23 such that that portion can be adhered to the inside of the inner sheet 34. Alternatively the tongue portion and the inner sheet 34 may be taped to-- gether along the outer margin of the inner sheet 34.
Figure 2 shows a corner of say, a cover 14, inserted inside an inner sheet 36 corresponding to 35 in Figures l and la, which is welded to a back sheet over an area shown as 45. A tongue portion 23' is rebated from the outer edge of the inner sheet 36, sharp corners being avoided, to a line sufficiently below the welded area 45 to enable the tongue portion 23' to be folded over and tucked between the cover 14 and the' inner sheet 36 without buckling.
The embodiments of Figures 1 and - la and 2 may be used with books of varying widths. When covering books of small width it may be that the tongue portion 23 or 23' will protrude beyond the inner edge of the inner sheet 35 or 36 when folded under it. This protruding area of the tongue portion may be cut away, there may be tear strips or folds provided whereby this area may be removed without cutting implements or the area may be folded back on or under the inner sheet.
It will be appreciated that double-sided adhesive tape such as 24 above can be positioned at various points on the inside or outside surfaces of the inner sheet 35 or 36 and/or tongue portion 23 or 23' to enable the tongue portion - whether folded back or not - to be affixed to the inner sheet.
The blanks can be varied and formed without the preformed pocket 40 this being replaced by another inner sheet and tongue portion combinations.
Instead of using adhesive tape to secure portions of the jacket blank together, appropriate areas of the blank could be coated with a layer of adhesive material which is non-tacky but which will adhere to a correspondingly coated area of the blank when the two areas are brought together in faceto-face contact. It will again be appreciat ed that various combinations of the methods of sticking the covers together about the book may be used.
