Abstract

157,381. Schieferstein, H. Feb. 15, 1919, [Convention date]. Fans.-In a rapidly oscillating mechanical system comprising an oscillating elastic plane or the like, the rate of oscillation of the driving element, e.g. crank, is made to correspond with the " natural " rate of vibration of the elastic plane either by " tuning " the plane by loading or otherwise or by adjusting the driving-power, the result being a maximum efficiency of propulsive effort on the air or other fluid medium in which the plane vibrates. The invention is applied to the propulsion of gases, to vacuum-cleaning, and to the propulsion of ships, vehicles, sledges, and aircraft. In the case of a vacuum cleaner, Fig. 4, the vibrating blade a is mounted in a nozzle-like casing g and carries on the edge opposite its pivot a brush f. In the case of ship propulsion, Fig. 6, the plane a may be horizontal as shown or vertical, and more than one may be employed. Fig. 9 shows the application to an aeroplane, two superposed vibrating planes a<1>, a<2> being employed. The edges of these planes are made as flexible and free from inertia as possible, e.,g. an elastic steel skeleton covered with fabric or formed by separate elastic laminµ. Further, the lateral ends have extensions of triangular form rounded at the apex and connected to the main plane by springs d, e, the aim being that the extensions shall have no pronounced " natural " oscillation. The planes may be made of elastic homogeneous material (steel, bronze, &c.) or of ribs covered with fabric, or may consist of several independent oscillating planes. Specifications 17033/90, [Class 114, Ships &c., Div. II], and 5092/00 are referred to.
