Description

A DEVICE FOR FIXING A HINGE PART TO A FLANGED SECTION, PARTICULARLY A DOOR JAMB SECTION (71) We, BRUYNZEEL B.V., a Dutch Company, of Postbus 204, Zaandam, The Netherlands, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to a device for fixing a plate-like part of a hinge to a flanged section, particularly a door Jamb section, in which the binge part extends through a slot in a flange of the section, is slidably guided by a clamping plate and is fixable by said clamping plate which at the same time functions as a nut and by at least one fixing screw to the flanged section.
Fixing devices of the kind defined above are known from e.g. German Gebrauchsmuster 7132772.
According to the invention there is provided a device of the kind defined wherein the hinge part and the clamping plate are united for insertion through the slot prior to fixing by co-operating means on the hinge part and the clamping plate which permit relative adjustment.
The plate-like hinge part can be inserted together with the clamping plate as a relatively thin unit through the slot and thereafter may be fixed from the exterior by one or more fixing screws. The thickness of the said device can be received within the play which is normally maintained between the jamb recess in the wall or partition and the jamb sections. so that no cutting has to be done when mounting the jamb sections.
In a practical embodiment. in which in a manner known per se a single central fixing screw is used to secure a hinge part to a door jamb. the screw projects through a slot in the hinge part extending in a direction perpendicular to the flange of the door jamb section. the clamping plate is fixed in position by engagement of its edge adjacent to the flange around one edge of the slot in that flange and by engagement of its opposite edge around the angle formed by the rabbet in the section, the edges of the clamping plate extending perpendicularly to the flange being adapted for guiding the hinge part in the direction of insertion.
In a preferred embodiment the clamping plate is fixed in position with respect to the door jamb section by using at least two fixing screws, which are disposed on either side of the hinge part, and lugs bent from the plane of the clamping plate engage as guide lugs around the side edges of the hinge part.
Embodiments of the invention are diagrammatically illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cross-section through a door jamb section with fixing device for a socalled blade hinge in a first embodiment; Figure la is a side and front view of a plate hinge to be fixed; Figure ib is a side and front view of a clamping plate; Figure 2 is a cross-section through a door jamb section with fixing device for a plate hinge in a second embodiment; Figure 2a is a perspective view of the plate hinge to be fixed, and Figure 2b is a perspective view of the clamping plate co-operating with said plate hinge.
The door jamb section 1 as shown in Figure 1 is of a type which generally is made of light metal such as aluminium. A socalled rabbet 2 is formed in the body la of the flanged section of the door jamb. In a flange or flat part ib situated adjacent said rabbet a slot 3 is provided through which a plate-like part 4a of a so-called plate hinge 4 as shown in Figure la may be inserted. The slot 3 is immediately adjacent to the inner side of the rabbet wall 2a, so that the part 4a engages the inner side of the rabbet wall 2a.
For fixing the part 4a to the rabbet wall 2a the clamping plate 5 as shown in Figure 1b is used. Said clamping plate co-operates as a nut with a central fixing screw 6, the head of which is sunk into a conical recess, formed by pressing in the rabbet wall 2a and co-operating with a screw-threaded bore 7 of the clamping plate 5. The fixing screw 6 extends through a slot 8 in the part 4a of the plate hinge 4, said slot permitting shifting the part 4a in a direction perpendicular to the flange lb.
The clamping plate 5 at the same time serves to guide the part 4a in the said direction perpendicular to the flange lb.
The clamping plate 5 is firstly fixed in its position by means of a pair of lugs 5a, and a pair of lugs 5b bent from the plane of the clamping plate. The lugs 5a engage around the angle formed by rabbet walls 2a and 2b, and the lugs 5b engage outwardly around the longitudinal edge of the slot 3 remote from the rabbet wall 2a. Guiding of the part 4a by the clamping plate is by means of a plurality of guiding lugs 9 formed along the edges of the clamping plate and which are perpendicular to the flange lb, the corresponding longitudinal edges of the hinge part 4a being enclosed between said lugs.
When placing the plate hinge 4. the part 4a and the clamping plate 5 are inserted as a unit through the slot 3, and to this end the part 4a and the clamping plate 5 are united by a connection permitting mutual sliding in the guiding direction. Near the slot 8 a L-shaped lug 10 has been bent perpendicularly from the plane of the plate, the horizontal leg 10a of said lug (see Figure la left) fitting into the cross piece lia of the substantially L-shaped slot 11 in the clamping plate 5. When uniting the part 4a and the clamping plate 5 the lug part 10a passes through the slot part ila of the clamping plate 5. the vertical lug part 10b engaging with the slot part llb in which the vertical lug part 10b may slide longitudinally. The part 4a and the clamping plate 5 may be locked together by simply twisting the horizontal lug part 10a through a certain angle in the plane of the plate.
In the embodiment according to Figure 2 the clamping plate 5" is fixed in its position with respect to the jamb section 1" by two fixing screws 6" which in similar manner to the first embodiment are counter sunk in the rabbet wall 2"a. each screw co-operating with a screw-threaded bore 7" provided adjacent to an edge of the clamping plate 5".
The part 4"a of the plate hinge 4" is arranged with its both opposite edges 12 between the fixing screws 7". As in the first described embodiment the part S"a and the clamping plate 5" are combined into a unit in which a special connection is used, permitting sliding and therefore adjustment of the part 4"a with respect te the clamping plate 5". A lug 10" is bent from the material of the part 5"a and the horizontal part 10"a of said lug fits into the cross part 11"a of the generally L-shaped slot 11" in the clamping plate 5".
The part 4"a and the clamping plate 5" are locked together after the uniting of the parts by twisting the lug part 10"a through a small angle in the plane of the combined unit.
Guiding of the part 4"a with respect to the clamping plate 5" is effected by means of four guiding lugs 13, bent from the plane of the clamping plate Se, which engage around the edges 12 of the hinge part 4"a.
A device of the type according to said second embodiment may be used with door jamb sections having varying dimensions of the rabbet region.
