Abstract

157,118. Siemens & Halske Akt.-Ges. Oct. 3, 1919, [Convention date]. Aspirating-apparatus, ejector.-Relates to mercury-vapour jet pumps with an electric arc generator for the vapour, and consists in an improvement upon the form having two barometric seals constituting the mercury electrodes, and a condensation space from the end of which the vapour that has passed through the space is removed. To this end the condensed mercury vapour is led back to the electrodes, which consist of receptacles filled with mercury enclosed in the vapour space of the pump and arranged for mutual overflow of the liquid so as to regulate levels. The electrodes a, b are coaxial cylindrical vessels in the vaporizing space c filled with mercury up to the top of the separating-wall d, the selection of the inner vessel as the cathode diminishing the risk of undue heating and cracking of the pump wall. The vapour space communicates with the condensation space f by an outlet e, cooling-water being passed through a jacket g to condense the vapour. A low-power exhauster is connected to a tube i, and a connection h near the outlet nozzle is in communication with the receptacle to be exhausted. A portion l of the series resistance of the arc surrounds the wall of the vaporizing space in order to prevent premature condensation.
