Description
(54) METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DRAWING LINEARLY
EXTENDED MATERIAL
(71) We, KABEL- UND METALL
WERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE
AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, a body corporate organised under the laws of Germany of 271 Vahrenwalder Strasse, Hannover,
Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement::- The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for drawing linearly extended material, more particularly metal tubing, the material to be drawn being passed through a drawing die, the material being engaged downstream of the die by means of a drawing clamp which, following engagement of the material, revolves at a speed equal to that of a revolving drawing drum receiving the drawn material, about the axis of rotation of the drum, the material being accordingly wound on to this drum, the clamp and material being disengaged from one another when the required drawing force is capable of being transmitted by the friction between the material and the surface of the drum, and the drawn material thereafter being run off the drum continuously.
In the production of seamless metal tubes it is usual to start from a block which is pressed into the form of a tube. This tube is next rolled down to a smaller cross-section in a pilger machine and is afterwards drawn down to the final dimension in a plurality of drawing stages. Because the size of the block cannot in practice be increased indefinitely, relatively short lengths of tubing have to be dealt with both in the pilger operation and also in the subsequent drawing operations. The economy of this method of tube production can be enhanced if it is possible to improve the ratio of drawing times to preparation times. The latter are the times required for the preparation of the tubes before they undergo drawing. This preparation includes (e.g.) dosing with a drawing oil, introducing a mandrel, providing a pointed drawing
hook, introducing the drawing hook into the
die, and engaging the drawing hook by means
of the drawing clamp.
These operations have hitherto been ham
pered by the fact that, when drawn from drum
to drum, the entire length of tubing assumed
the form of a coil, i.e. was curved. Before the
tube could be threaded easily, or in some
cases at all, first into a pointing device, next
into a set of straightening rollers, and then
into the next die, the operatives had to
straighten the length of tube concerned,
starting from one end. This procedure has
been less than fully satisfactory either in
respect of the straightness of the straightened
length of tube or in respect of labour costs.
It is an object of the present invention to
enable the drawing of linearly extended
material to be performed more economically
than in the prior methods mentioned above.
According to the present invention, we
provide a method of drawing linearly ex
tended material by passing the material
to be drawn through a drawing die, the
material being engaged downstream of the
die by means of a drawing clamp which,
following engagement ofthe material,revolves,
at a speed equal to that of a revolving drawing .drum receiving the drawn material, about the
axis of rotation of the drum, the material
being accordingly wound on to this drum,
the clamp and material being disengaged
from one another when the required drawing
force is capable of being transmitted by the
friction between the material and the surface
of the drum, and the drawn material there
after being run off the drum continuously; in
which method the clamp is rotated initially
in an orbit whose diameter is greater than the
drum diameter, but, after the disengagement
of the clamp and material, is transferred to an
orbit whose diameter is equal to or smaller
than the drum diameter.
The initial rotation of the clamp in an
orbit whose diameter is greater than the drum
diameter gives what has been called a drawing
tangent, i.e. a portion of tubing extending from the clamp to the surface of the drum, whose length is a function of the difference between the two diameters, i.e. the drum diameter and the initial-orbit diameter. The drum is desirably run at higher speed after the disengagement of the clamp and material, but the transfer of the clamp to an orbit whose diameter is equal to or smaller than the drum diameter makes it possible to avoid increasing unduly the centrifugal force with which one has to contend.
For the performance of the method of the invention, an (apparatus has been found particularly suitable which comprises a drawing drum, a drawing clamp mounted on the drum, and a drawing die, in which apparatus: the clamp is carried on a support carried on the drum; the clamp is pivotable about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum; the support and clamp can be retracted, from an orbit whose diameter is greater than the drum diameter, towards the axis of the drum, i.e. to an orbit whose diameter is equal to or smaller than the drum diameter, after the disengagement of the clamp and material; and the die is mounted also so as to be pivotable about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum.
This apparatus preferably has associated with the drum a driveable set of straightening rollers, so mounted as to be capable of engaging the material between the clamp and the point at which the material meets the drum, whereby the rollers can be brought laterally towards the material as a preliminary to the disengagement of the clamp and material. This arrangement is more particularly suitable for what may be called multiple drawing installations, wherein a length of tube is drawn down in a plurality of passes in a single procedure. However, the arrangement just mentioned is also useful in a final stage in the production of straight tube lengths, where it can be employed in place of the known drawing benches which operate considerably more slowly.
Preferably the drive of the set of straightening rollers is related to that of the drum, whereby the speed of rotation of the rollers is kept incrementally greater than that of the drum. The turns encircling the drum are thus kept in tension, so that the required drawing force is not only exerted by the drum but also duly transmitted by the material. This arrangement is convenient particularly if, as in one specific form of apparatus according to the invention, the drum is constructed as an annular disc, having in its peripheral surface a groove of V-shaped cross-section so dimensioned as to receive the linearly extended material. The material can be wrapped around the annular disc through an angle of less than 3600 and can be effectively located in the V-shaped groove.Pressure rollers should preferably be mounted on the circumference of the drum in a position to urge the material, after the disengagement of the clamp material, towards the peripheral surface of the drum and into the groove of
V-shaped cross-section, if present.
The invention is explained more fully below with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which each of Figures 1, 2 and 3 is a fragmentary top view of equipment being used in accordance with the invention in the drawing of a linearly extended material, Figure 1 showing the initial situation, and Figures 2 and 3 showing certain subsequent situations in the drawing procedure.
In the procedure to which the drawings relate, a copper tube 1, drawn off from an annular coil, not shown in the drawings, has a floating mandrel and a dose of drawing oil introduced into its leading end, and has a drawing hook attached to its leading end.
The leading end of the tube 1, so prepared, is passed through a die 2, and engaged, downstream of the die 2, in a drawing clamp 3 which is connected to a drawing drum 4.
The clamp 3 is actually carried on a support 5 by means of which the clamp 3 can be displaced radially inwards to a retracted position, not shown in the drawings. When the drum 4 is driven, the tube 1 is drawn through the die 2, its cross-section being thereby reduced. The clamp 3 is at this stage moving in an orbit whose diameter is greater than the drum diameter. This operation produces what has been called a drawing tangent; this extends, as shown at 6, between the clamp 3 and the point at which the drawn copper tube meets the drum 4 (Figures 2 and 3). Both the die 2 and the clamp 3 are mounted pivotably, namely so as to be pivotable about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum 4.After a sufficiently great length of drawn tube has been wound on to the drum 4 to enable the required drawing force to be transmitted through this wound drawn tube, the drawing tangent 6 is introduced into a set of straightening rollers 7, which engage it as shown in Figure 3, and the drawn tube is thereafter disengaged from the clamp 3.
The support 5 together with the clamp 3 is then retracted by being drawn or hinged inwards towards the axis of rotation of the drum 4, and the drum 4 is driven at full speed.
The straightening rollers 7 are likewise driven, their speed being determined by the drive of the drum 4. The peripheral speed at which the straightening rollers 7 are driven is preferably slightly higher than the peripheral speed of the drum 4, so that the turns of the drawn copper tube encircling the drum 4 do always make contact with the wall of this drum and can thus transmit the necessary drawing force. However, this function may if desired be performed instead by pressure rollers, not shown, which urge the drawn copper tube inwardly against the surface of the drum 4.
This arrangement is more particularly suitable if the drum 4 is shallow, so that it could be regarded as a disc, and if there is formed in its cylindrical surface a groove of V-shaped cross-section, running in the peripheral direction, into which the drawn copper tube is inserted. The angle of wrap of the tube on this disc-like drum can be less than 3600.
A A straight drawing tangent when drawing from coil to coil has advantages if the length of tube has to be further processed by being straightened, cut to length, or drawn down to a smaller diameter or cross-section.
However, the method of the invention is advantageous more particularly when one has to draw short copper tubes to a certain final dimension in a plurality of consecutive drawing stations. The drawing tangent then makes possible a virtually continuous operation, the drawing tangent threading itself easily into the next die.
