Abstract

156,975. Armstrong Siddeley Motors, Ltd., and Farren, W. S. Nov. 28, 1919. Mountings for use on aircraft; mounting.- Consists in effecting lateral and vertical adjustments of a gun by means of horizontal spindles which are employed to connect lugs on the gun to supporting-brackets on the mounting. The arrangement is applicable to fixing a gun or guns on aircraft where an accurate initial adjustment of the axis of the gun relative to the datum line is made, it being necessary, after dismounting the gun, to restore it quickly to its original setting. In the form shown in plan, the gun lugs (not shown) are connected to brackets A, B on a frame C by spindles D, F which effect the lateral and vertical adjustments respectively. The bracket A carries clamping-lugs A', A<4> adapted to receive screwed sleeves A', A<5> between which the rear gun lug is held. The sleeve A<5> is externally screwed for adjustment within the lug A<4> and the sleeve A<7> is split and screw mounted on the spindle D. To attach the gun, the spindle D carrying the sleeve A' is passed through the lug A<3> and through the gun lug; the spindle D being then rotated by a key applied to its end D<4> to screw its other end into the sleeve A<5>. The sleeve A<7> is then adjusted up to the gun lug by turning a milled head A<8> and the parts are clamped by screwing-up the bolts A<11> which serve to connect the bracket A to the frame C. The bracket B is likewise provided with lugs B', B<4> and, after inserting the spindle F, the front gun lug is pressed against the lug B<4> by a split sleeve B<5> screwed into the lug B<3>. The spindle F has a reduced end F<2> engaging the lug B<4> and concentric with an enlarged end F<3> which passes through the sleeve B<5>. An eccentric intermediate portion of the spindle F passes through the gun lug so that by turning the spindle F the gun is elevated about the spindle D to an angle determined by a scale F<6>. The parts are then fixed by screwing-up the sleeve B<5> and the clamping- bolts B<9>. During lateral adjustment, the front bracket may pivot on one of the bolts B<9> or on a special dowel pin B<10>, and during elevation adjustment, the bolts A<11> can move in elongated holes in the frame C.
