(54) FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM

Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a liquid fuel supply apparatus.
The liquid fuel supply apparatus already kn:wn mainly to consist of a diaphragm pump directly driven by an internal-combustion engine, a delivery pipe and return pipe to a liquid fuel tank and a fluid level transmitter located in the fuel tank. Recently apparatus have become known which use an electrically driven rotary pump, designed as a submersible pump. This pump is directly located in the fuel tank. Such rotary pumps can operate for a longer time than the usual diaphragm pumps.
According to the present invention there is provided a liquid fuel supply apparatus comprising: an elecrically driven rotary pump adapted to be fitted in a fuel tank; a fluid level transmitter; and a fuel pipe connection; wherein the pump's casing is adapted to be mounted on a housing which accommodates the fluid level transmitter, and wherein the pump casing is provided with a lateral bore adjacent to the inlet channel of the pump.
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
figure 1 is a part-sectional view of the fuel supply system; and figure 2 is a top view of the system as seen in the direction of the arrow II in Figure 1.
An electrical rotary pump, a so-called submersible pump, not shown in the drawing, is located in a pump casing 1. The bottom of the pump casing is provided with a suction filter 2 which filters out coarse impurities in the fuel. A rotary pump, when in an unfavourable mounting position, cannot, when new or the tank is empty, suck in the fuel because of an air cushion.
Adjacent to the inlet channel of the rotary pump, therefore in the low pressure region, a bore 3, for allowing the air to escape, is provided in the pump casing which, depending on the fuel to be pumped and on the performance of the pump, has a diameter from 1.5 to 5.0 mm. The bore 3 is so positioned that, in an inclined mounting position of the pump, the bore is always at the top. The suction filter 2 is provided with flattenings 4 in order to be adapted to an inclined mounting position.
A housing 5 is flanged at its lower end and the pump casing 1 is adapted to be mounted on the housing, and can be locked thereto, for example, by a snap connection to form a single unit. The housing 5 accommodates a fluid level transmitter 7 in a chamber 6. Said fluid level transmitter consists of a coil 8, a plug connection 9, and of a sliding portion 10. The sliding portion 10 is-rigidly connected with a cranked lever 11 to the end of which a float 12 is fastened and which is rotatable on an axle 13. The axle 13 simultaneously is the fixing point in the housing 5.
The housing 5 also accommodates a delivery pipe 14 and a return pipe 15, and is at the same time a holder for the carbon brushes (not shown), whereby an easy exchange of the carbon brushes is made possible. These pipes are inserted into a flanged cover 16 of the housing 5 from above. The cover 16 is provided with a seal 17 and has a so-called bayonet catch 18 to attach it to a fastening plate 19 of a fuel tank 20. Thus the complete fuel supply system can be mounted as simply as screwing on a tank cover. It is only necessary to insert an electric cable into a cable channel 21 located in the centre and to connect the fuel pipes to the delivery pipe and the return pipe 14, 15.
With a rotary pump, the return pipe can normally be omitted, because this type of a pump cannot produce a high pressure, and the equipment is unlikely to be damaged without a return pipe.
Claims (6)
1. A liquid fuel supply apparatus comprising: an electrically driven rotary pump adapted to be fitted in a fuel tank; a fluid level transmitter; and a fuel pipe connection; wherein the pump's casing is adapted to be mounted on a housing which accommodates the fluid level transmitter, and wherein the pump casing is provided with a lateral bore adjacent to the inlet channel of the pump.
2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the housing simultaneously serves as a carbon bush holder.
3. An apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the pump casing is locked to the housing by means of a snap connection.
4. An apparatus according to claim 1,2 or 3, wherein on its upper part the housing is provided with a flanged cover and means for sealingly fastening the cover over an aperture in the fuel tank.
5. An apparatus according to claim 1, 2, 3, or 4, wherein a delivery pipe for pumped fuel and a cable channel for the electric supply of the pump are accommodated in the housing.
6. A liquid fuel supply apparatus substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
