Description
(54) AN IMPROVEMENT IN OR RELATING TO SLEEPING
BAGS
(71) We, MOUNTAIN EQUIP MT LIMITED, a British Company, of Ocor Street, Glossop, Derbyshire, and BMISH HAMILTON, a British Subject, of 132 Springfield Road, Sheffield 7, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a tent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to sleeping bags and has for its object to provide an improvement therein.
A sleeping bag, particularly for use, for example, by campers, hikers, cavers and climbers, must not only be as warm as possible but must also be of light weight and must be capable of being rolled into as small a package as possible when not in use.
According to the invention, there is provided a sleeping bag made of a material com prizing a backing yarn having a synthetic plastics pile. The pile will preferably be at least 18 mm. thick and have a helical and/or mechanical crimp. The material may be a polyester material. The backing yarn will preferably be a synthetic yarn, for example a polyester. The sleeping bag may have at least one side of double thickness, that is to say made of two sheets of pile material, each individual pile of the two sheets of material preferably being between 12 m.m. and 25 m thicl; At least one side of the bag may be constituted by the pile material laminated to one side of a plastics foam material and in this case a covering material may be laminated to the other side of the plastics foam material, the pile of the pile material being innermost. The plastics foam material may be of varying thickness from one part of the bag to another.
In order that the invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification, of which: Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the construction of a sleeping bag embodying the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a scrap view, drawn to a somewhat larger scale than Fig. 1, which illustrates a possible modification.
Referring now to Fig. 1, the sleeping bag there illustrated comprises upper and lower sheets 10 and 12 of rectangular shape joined around three sides to form an open ended bag.
Each sheet is made from a material comprising a synthetic yarn fabric 14 having a polyester pile 16 in the region of 18 m.m.
thick. Although not shown in the drawing, the pile has a helical or mechanical crimp.
It has been found that a sleeping bag as described above can be manufactured relatively cheaply and is of very light weight.
Nevertheless, it is surprisingly warm in use and can be rolled into a very small package when not in use. Consequently, it is especially useful for use by campers, hikers, climbers, cavers, sailors and fishermen.
In a modification of the construction descried above at least the upper sheet, but preferably both sheets, may be of double thickness. That is to say, as shown in Fig. 2, at least the upper sheet may be made of two sheets of material each comprising a backing yarn 14 having a synthetic plastics pile 16 (and in this case the pile of the outermost sheet of material will preferably be made of a plastics synthetic material the pile threads of which again have a helical or mechanical crimp).
Various other modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
For example, the pile material may be made by either a weaving process or by the sliver knitting process. Furthermore, the pile material may be laminated to one side of a plastics foam material and a covering material will then preferably be laminated to the other side of the plastics foam material (so that the pile will be innermost). Such a laminated construction may be produced using an adhesive or a heat sealing technique. In such a con struction of bag the foam plastics material may be of varying thickness. For example, in the upper region of the bag the foam material may be, say, 2 m.m. thick but in the lower region of the bag a somewhat thicker foam material may be required, say between 4 m.m.
and 10 m.m. thick. The covering material may be a knitted synthetic or organic material.
Instead of being of rectangular shape, the sleeping bag may be of a shape following the body shape of the user. In either case, the bag may be provided with a short zip to facilitate entry or with a zip extending around two sides (and in this latter case it is able to be opened and zipped to another similar bag).
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A sleeping bag made of a material comprising a backing yarn having a synthetic plastics pile.
2. A sleeping bag according to claim 1, in which the pile is at least 18 m.m. thick and has a helical and/or mechanical crimp.
3. A sleeping bag according to either one of the preceding claims, in which the material is a polyester material.
4. A sleeping bag according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the backing yarn is a synthetic yarn.
5. A sleeping bag according to claim 4, in which the synthetic backing yarn is a polyester.
6. A sleeping bag according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the sleeping bag has at least one side of double thickness, that is to say made of two sheets of pile material.
7. A sleeping bag according to claim 6 when appendant to claim 1, in which each individual pile of the two sheets of material is between 12 m.m. and 25 m.m. thick.
8. A sleeping bag according to any one of claims 1 to 5, at least one side of which is constituted by the pile material laminated to one side of a plastics foam material.
9. A sleeping bag according to claim 8, in which a covering material is laminated to the other side of the plastics foam material, the pile of the pile material being innermost.
10. A sleeping bag according to either one of the preceding claims, in which the plastics foam material is of varying thickness from one part of the bag to another.
11. A sleeping bag constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification.
