Description
(54) GARMENT SLEEVES
(71) We, BELSTAFF INTERNA
TIONAL LIMITED, a British Company of
Caroline Street, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent,
Staffordshire, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
The invention concerns garment sleeves and has more particular reference to the sleeves of weatherproof and like protective garments (hereinafter referred to as "garments of the kind specified").
In order to limit the ingress of water it is known, in the case of garments of the kind specified, to form the cuff or wrist region of a garment sleeve with an inner wrist band of elasticated or otherwise close fitting form and an overlying cuff, the wrist band usuallv being displaced inwardly of the sleeve end and being masked by such sleeve end.
Whilst such inner wrist bands provide an effective barrier to the ingress of water, the requirement that such wrist band snugly fit a range of wrist sizes often results in an excessive tightness in respect of thicker wrists, thereby giving rise to a reduced circulation and to discomfort to the wearer.
The object of the present invention is to provide a garment sleeve which will effectively prevent the ingress of water yet which avoids the difficulty met with in connection with the aforesaid arrangement.
According to the present invention a sleeve for a garment of the kind specified is characterised in that the end thereof is of closed loop form and a tab is provided which extends in the peripheral direction of the cuff and which is releasably connectable with the cuff at a selected position spaced from the position of attachment of the tab to the cuff, the tab being located within a tunnel adjacent the sleeve end and extending outwardly of such tunnel. the free end of the tab being movable longitudinally of the tunnel thereby effectively to reduce the peripheral dimension of the cuff.
According to a preferred feature. cooperating releasable fastener means are provided on the tab and cuff, such means comprising a first element having a multiplicity of outwardly projecting hook elements and a second element comprising a fibrous mat with which the said elements are releasably engageable.
The invention will now be described further. bv wav of example only. with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates one embodiment thereof and in which: Figure I is a perspective view of a sleeve end with the tab retracted to a maximum extent and the sleeve to the full peripheral dimension: Figure 2 is a perspective view of a sleeve end with the tab drawn out and the end of such tab releasably attached to the fibrous mat at the outer surface of the cuff, the cuff being at less than its maximum peripheral dimension: and
Figure 3 is a section taken on line III-III of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing, and particularly to Figures 1 and 3 thereof, a garment sleeve 11 is provided with a tab 12 of which the free end 13 carries an attachment element 14 for co-operation with a fibrous mat 15 applied to the outer surface of the cuff 16.
The tab 12 is located within a tubular pocket 17 formed by turning over the fabric of the sleeve in the end region thereof, the inner end of the tab being secured to the cuff bv a transverse line of stitching 18 and the outer end 13 extending from the said pocket through a slit 19 in the cuff. The tab convenientlv comprises an outer portion of like material to the cuff and an elasticated portion wherebv the tab is secured to the cuff. The pocket is of a length approximate ly equal to one half of the periphery of the sleeve so as to extend between the longitudinal side seams of the sleeve.
The attachment element 14 and the fibrous mat 15 conveniently comprise the cooperating elements of a conventional
VELCRO (Registered Trade Mark) fastening material, element 14 consisting of a small piece of the male part of such a material and mat 15 being an elongate strip of the female component of such material.
The mat 15 is stitched to the material of the cuff by lines of stitching 20 extending in the peripheral direction thereof and is of a length approximately equal to one half of the periphery of the sleeve so as to extend between the longitudinal side seams of the sleeve, at the opposite side of the sleeve from the tubular pocket 17.
In the normal condition of the sleeve the tab is substantially wholly retracted within the tubular pocket and the cuff is to the full peripheral dimension as shown in Figure 1.
When it is required to reduce the peripheral dimension of the cuff. as in inclement weather, the tab is withdrawn from the tubular pocket to an extent sufficient for the purpose so as to overlie the mat. and the cooperating fastening elements 14, 15 are interengaged to hold the cuff to a required dimension, the material of the tubular pocket being drawn in concertina fashion upon that part of the tab remaining in the tubular pockets in the manner shown in Figure 2.
The elastication characteristic of the innermost part of the tab ensures a close fit of the cuff on the wearer's wrist, but without the discomfort arising from the elasticated wrist bands of conventional garments.
On separation of the cooperating fastening elements, the tab retracts into the tubular pocket as the cuff reverts to its full peripheral dimension.
By means of the invention. we are able to provide a cuff arrangement of ready adjustment according to the needs of the wearer, which is of simple form and operation and of pleasing aesthetic effect in both of its modes of operation. that is to say with the cuff to is full or to its reduced dimension.
The invention is not restricted to the exact features of the embodiment hereindisclosed, since alternatives will readily present themselves to one skilled in the art. Thus for example. the cuff may be gussetted rather than of the plain form shown. It is not necessarv that the fastening means comprise a VELCRO (Registered Trade Mark) type material. nor that a continuous and infinite (within limits) range of adjustment be possible. Furthermore. whilst it is preferred that the tab include an elasticated portion. it is not necessary that such elasticated portion be included. However. if preferred, the tab may be wholly of an elasticated material.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A sleeve for a garment of the kind specified, characterised in that the end thereof is of closed loop form and a tab is provided which extends in the peripheral direction of the cuff and which is releasably connectable with the cuff at a selected position spaced from the position of attachment of the tab to the cuff, the tab being located within a tunnel adjacent the sleeve end and extending outwardly of such tunnel, the free end of the tab being movable longitudinally of the tunnel thereby effectively to reduce the peripheral dimension of the cuff.
2. A sleeve as claimed in claim 1, wherein co-operating releasable fastener means are provided on the tab and cuff, such means comprising a first element having a multiplicity of outwardly projecting hook elements and a second element comprising a fibrous mat with which the said elements are releasably engageable.
3. A sleeve as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein that end of the tab secured to the cuff is elasticated.
4. A sleeve as claimed in any one of the preceding claims. wherein the free end of the tab is of like material to the material of the cuff.
5. A sleeve as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the tab is of a length approximately equal to one half of the peripheral length of the cuff. and the range of possible attachment positions at the free end of the tab on the cuff extends over a distance equal to approximately one half of such peripheral length. being located in diametricallv opposed relationship to the tab in the fully retracted position thereof.
7. A sleeve for a garment of the kind specified. substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
8. A garment of the kind specified including a sleeve as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
