Description
(54) MACHINERY GUARDS
(71) I, DOUGLAS ERNEST ASLEN, a
British subject of 16 Pinfold Lane, Romiley,
Cheshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The invention concerns machinery guards, and has more particular reference to a guard for the exposed end of the arbor of a horizontal milling machine.
According to the invention there is proposed an arbor guard arrangement for a milling machine, such arrangement comprising a guard element for location in register with the exposed end of the arbor so as to at least partially to overlie the same and a mounting means adapted and arranged to support the element in such disposition from a location remote from said arbor.
According to a preferred feature the guard element is of cylindrical or part-cylindrical form and is adapted and arranged for positioning in axial register with the arbor.
According to a further preferred feature the mounting means is adapted for attachment to the dovetail guides of the milling machine overarm or other type of overarm.
According to a still further preferred feature the mounting means includes a transverse bar having clamping means thereon co-operable with the said dovetail guides, a mounting block adjustably positioned on the said transverse element, and a support rod extending from the said block and adapted to receive the guard element into engagement therewith.
Preferably the support rod extends from the mounting block perpendicularly of the transverse bar and is adjustable relative thereto in the axial direction of such rod, whilst the lower end of the support rod carries a mounting ring adjustably to receive the guard element into coaxial engagement therewith.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which illustrates one embodiment thereof in perspective view.
Thus, referring now to the drawing, an arbor guard for a milling machine comprises a cylindrical guard element 11 of such diameter as will engage the exposed end of the arbor (not shown) as a free fit thereon and a mounting means 12 for supporting the element 11 in such disposition. The guard element is preferably of cup-form as shown.
The mounting means 12 comprises a transverse bar 1 2a adapted for attachment to the dovetail guides 13 of the milling machine head by clamping blocks 12b slidable on the bar 12a and maintained in clamped relationship with the said dovetail guides 13 by a clamping bolt 12c extending through such blocks 12b, and further includes a mounting block 12d adjustable axially of the bar 12a and a support rod 12e engaged with and depending from such block. At its lower end the support rod 12e carries a mounting ring 12f, the said ring being of such internal dimension as to receive the guard element 11 as a close but free fit therein. The clamping blocks 1 2b have a radiussed contact face 12b, in order that such block might be of application to dove-tail guides of different angles of inclination.
As will be appreciated, in use, the transverse bar 12a is axially fixed in relation to at least one of the clamping blocks 12b, whilst selected positions of the mounting block 12d axially of the transverse bar 12c, and the support rod 12e relative to the mounting block 12d are maintained by fixing screws engaged with the block 12d and bearing on the transverse bar 12a and support rod 12e respectively.
The guard element 11 is likewise secured in the mounting ring 12f by means of a screw extending through the ring and into abutment with the surface of such element.
In use, the guard element 11 is mounted in telescoped engagement with the exposed end of the arbor by applying the clamping blocks 12b, in clamping engagement with the dovetail guides 13, and adjusting the mounting block 1 2d on the transverse bar 1 2a and the support rod 12e in such block 12d in such manner that the mounting ring 12f is in coaxial alignment with the arbor. The guard element 11 is then engaged with the mounting ring l2fto overlie the end of the arbor and is secured in position in the ring.
As will be appreciated, the disposition of the guard element 11 in relation to the otherwise exposed end of the arbor will preclude the possibility of the operative or his clothing coming into contact with the rotating arbor, and will accordingly protect such operative from injury.
The invention is not limited to the exact features of the embodiment described and illustrated, since alternatives will readily present themselves to one skilled in the art.
Thus, for example, it may be found more convenient to mount the guard element from the bed of the machine rather than from the dovetail guides, and in either event for the support rod to be other than perpendicular to the transverse bar. Whilst it is preferred that the guard element is cylindrical and has a closed end, it might be found sufficient merely to use a sleeve (whether of cylindrical form or otherwise) having an apertured or open outer end, an annular element arranged coaxially with the arbor, or any other element such as would provide an effective barrier against contact with the rotating arbor or the exposed part thereof.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. An arbor guard arrangement for a milling machine, such arrangement comprising a guard element for location in register with the exposed end of the arbor so as at least partially to overlie the same and a mounting means adapted and arranged to support the element in such disposition from a location remote from said arbor.
2. A guard arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein the guard element is of cylindrical or part-cylindrical form and is adapted and arranged for positioning in axial register with the arbor.
3. A guard arrangement as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the mounting means is adapted to be fixed in position upon the milling machine.
4. A guard arrangement as claimed in claim 3, wherein the mounting means is adapted for attachment to the dovetail guides of the milling machine overarm or other type of overarm.
5. A guard arrangement as claimed in claim 4, wherein the mounting means in cludes a transverse bar having clamping means thereon co-operable with the said dovetail guides, a mounting block adjustably positioned on the said transverse element, and a support rod extending from the said block and adapted to receive the guard element into engagement therewith.
6. A guard arrangement as claimed in claim 5, wherein the support rod extends from the mounting block perpendicularly of the transverse bar and is adjustable relative thereto in the axial direction of such rod.
7. A guard arrangement as claimed in claim 5 or 6, wherein the lower end of the support rod carries a mounting ring adjustably to receive the guard element into coaxial engagement therewith.
8. A guard arrangement as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the mounting means is adapted and arranged for the adjustment of the position and disposition of the guard element thereon.
9. A guard arrangement substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the single figure of the accompanying drawing.
