Abstract

156,757. McMullin, H. W. Oct. 18, 1917, [Convention date]. Hoods.-Relates to hoods for motor road vehicles, and consists in spring-actuated means for raising the hood, which is held in its collapsed position by locked holding means which is first unlocked and then positively operated to release the actuating means. Simultaneously a cover which encloses the collapsed hood is released and stowed. The hood framing is similar to that described in Specification 156,756, and the extension 17, Fig. 1, of the main bow 8 is connected to a cross rock-shaft 23 provided with crank-arms 24 pivoted to rods 26 having yokes 29 controlled by springs 31, which are placed in tension when the hood is lowered. A flexible waterproof cover 34 is then drawn from a pocket 35 at the back of the vehicle and wrapped around the hood. The - cover consists of a part 36, Fig. 6, having extensions 38, the three parts being traversed by an elastic strap 51, which, acting with cross straps 41, collapse the parts when released, apart 37 with elastic straps 43 attached, and parts 39. The straps 41 extend into the pocket and serve to draw the cover into the pocket when the parts are released. The part 36 is drawn over the hood, the part 37 extending around and under the hood, the sides of which are covered by the parts 38 and then the parts 39. The eyes of parts 38, 39, 37 are placed in that order over pins 56, and the eyes of straps 53 are placed over all. The pins 56, Figs. 1 and 3, pass through perforations 57 formed in brackets 59 attached to the sides of the body, and are controlled by springs 63. Extensions 65 of the pins 56 carry pivoted hooks 68 adapted to engage the side arms 70 of the lowered hood frame, being locked in this position by a rod 76, the other extremity 77 of which engages a stem 79 below a recess 78 therein, the stem being slidably mounted in a keeper 80 and held up by a spring 181. Wires 85 connect the stems 79 with arms of bell-crank levers 87, Fig 4, mounted on a member 90 in the pocket 35. The bell-crank levers are connected by a rod 96 connected to the core 100 of a solenoid 101 the circuit of which is closed by a push button 104. The stems 79 are thereby pulled down to allow the rod 76 to enter recesses 78 under pressure of springs 105 and thus to release the hooks 68 to allow the springs 31 to operate and raise the hood, the raising of the pins 56 releasing the straps of the cover, which is thereon drawn into the pocket 35. When the hood is again lowered, channel members 108 pivoted to the brackets 59 and having the springs 105 attached to them, are moved to the dotted line position, Fig. 3, to place the hooks 68 in engagement and to release the rods 76 from the recesses 78, when the stems 79 rise. The members 108 are then returned. The stems 79 may be hand-operated.
