Abstract

The device serves for transporting the work-pieces (W) from a feed transport by means of a transfer member (3), which has a plurality of receiving depressions (3a), onto a turret-head-type work-piece support (15) which can be moved in steps by switching movements. The receiving depressions of the transfer member are open in the transfer position of the work-pieces onto the work-piece support in the switching direction thereof in such a way that the work-pieces can be transferred to the work-piece support whilst hanging in the receiving depressions. As a result, the work-pieces can be guided and centred precisely. It is possible for long work-pieces to be pushed onto the work-piece support in stages. <IMAGE>

Description

(54) APPARATUS FOR TRANSPORTING HOLLOW WORKPIECES FROM A FEED CONVEYOR TO TREATMENT STATIONS (71) We, HERLAN & CO., MASCHINEN FABRIK, of Gerwigstrasse 53-57, 75 Karls- ruhe, a body corporate organised and existing under the laws of the German Federal Republic, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to an apparatus for transporting hollow workpieces such as tubes, sleeves, boxes or the like from a feed conveyor to individual treatment stations.
According to this invention there is provided an apparatus for transporting hollow workpieces such as tubes, sleeves, boxes or the like from a feed conveyor to individual treatment stations, comprising a transfer member having a receiving trough, a workpiece carrier in the form of a revolving head for transporting the workpieces in succession to the individual treatment stations and means for transferring the workpieces from the transfer member to the revolving head, the transfer member consisting of a top part, a middle part removably and replaceably connected with the top part and a bottom part which together with the middle part forms the receiving trough and which can be pivotally moved or swung downwards.
The receiving troughs will preferably be subjected to the action of a vacuum so that the workpieces are firmly held.
Further details of the invention appear from the accompanying drawing in which an embodiment of an apparatus for transferring cylindrical workpieces from a feed conveyor to a workpiece carrier in the form of a revolving head is shown by way of example. In the drawing: Figure 1 shows in side view a transfer member with a receiving trough, in combination with a feed conveyor, and Figure 2 shows the transfer member in section on the line V-V of Figure 1.
The workpiece W consisting of empty tubes are fed one by one from a feed conveyor 1 to a transfer member 10.
The transfer member 10 consists of a top part 10b, a middle part 10c connected witn the top part and a bottom part 10d which can be pivotally moved or swung downwards and which together with the middle part 10c forms a receiving trough 10a.
1he middle part 10c together with the bottom part lOd can be removed from the top part and replaced with alternative midale and bottom parts forming receiving troughs of different sizes for accommodatmg ditter- ent size workpieces.
The downward movement of the bottom part 10c enables workpieces which have become jammed during transfer to the workpiece carrier to be more easily freed.
The short distance between the teed conveyor and the receiving trough 10a ensures both rapid and reliable transfer and also gentle treatment of the thin-walled workpieces W which are very sensitive to pressure.
The transfer member 10 co-operates with a counter-rotating workpiece carrier 15 in the form of a revolving head, which is provided with receiving mandrels 15a distributed uniformly round its periphery. The workpieces W are transferred from the receiving trough 10a to the workpiece carrier 15 by means of a push rod (not shown) operated by a pneumatic cylinder, a cam or a lever.
By means of a flexible tube 11 suction is conducted into a bore 12 in the top part 10b. From this bore a plurality of branch ducts 13 extend through the top part 10b and middle part 10c and end in the receiving trough, 10a. The vacuum is of course so controlled, by means known per se, that the workpiece fed in from the supply conveyor 1 is reliably held in the receiving trough 10a by the vacuum, but the vacuum ceases when the push rod slides the workpiece W on to the receiving mandrels 15a.
