Description
(54) PURLINS
(71) We, TI MErSEC LIMITED, a
British Company, of Binningham Road, Oldbury, Warley, Worcestershire B69 4HE, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to purlins which are used to support the roof claddings of buildings, the object of the invention being to vide such a purlin in an approved form. The subject matter of the application is divided from our Application No. 39645/75 (Serial
No. 1566701) filed 27th September 1975.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a purlin formed from a single piece of metal and having a pair of flanges which are interconnected by a web portion, characterised in that the thickness of said web portion is less than the thickness of each of said flanges, and in that said web portion is formed with a plurality of stiffening ribs of corrugations which extend transversely across the depth of said web portion between the two flanges.
The flanges may respectively extend from said web portion in opposite directions or in the same direction.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification.
Referring then to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings accompanying the Provisional Spe cification, the purlin shown therein is formed from a single piece of metal which is bent to provide two flanges 10 and 11 and a web portion 12. The two flanges 10 and 11 extend respectively from opposite sides of the web portion 12 and moreover each flange is bent along its outer edge to form a lip having a free edge lOa or lla The thickness of each flange is indicated in Figure 1 by reference 13 and the thickness of the web portion is indicated in Figure 2 by reference 14 and it will be seen that the latter thickness is less than the former thickness. This difference in the two thicknesses is conveniently achieved by bending the piece of metal so as to form each flange with a double thickness of material. Moreover the web 12 is formed with corrugations as indicated by reference 15 which extend transversely across the depth of the web portion between the two flanges.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings accompanying the
Provisional Specification, the purlin again comprises a web portion 16 and two flanges 17 and 18 which extend from opposite sides of the web portion and again the thickness of the web portion is less than the thickness of each flange. In this case the web portion is formed with a plurality of spaced stiffening ribs 19 which also extend transversely across the depth of the web portion between the two flanges.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings accompanying the
Provisional Specification, the purlin also comprises a web portion 20 and two flanges 21 and 22, the thickness of the web portion being less than the thickness of each flange.
In this case the web portion is formed with a plurality of stiffening ribs 23 of generally X-shaped configuration which extend across the depth of the web portion between the two flanges.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A purlin formed from a single piece of metal and having a pair of flanges which are interconnected by a web portion, charaterised in that the thickness of said web portion is less than the thickness of each of said flanges and in that said web portion is formed with a plurality of stiffening ribs or corrugations which extend transversely across the depth of said web portion between the two flanges.
