Abstract

156,596. Ely, W.., (Assignee of Maloney, F. H.). July 31, 1917, [Convention date]. Pickling.-Small metal articles are pickled and washed in passing through a rotary drum having a helical member on its inner surface, and provided at its periphery with scoops or buckets which raise pickling and washing liquid from troughs below the drum, the liquids passing into the drum through perforations therein at the bottom of the scoops &c. The drum 1 is rotated upon rollers 2, for example by means of a sprocket chain. An internal spiral blade 8 extends throughout the drum providing a channel 8<1> for delivering the material fed by the hopper 7. A scoop 9 is attached to the drum over a tank 12 containing a pickling solution, e.g. sulphuric acid. A second scoop 15 is situated over a tank 14 containing another cleansing agent, e.g. soap solution. As the drum rotates the liquids enter the scoops and flow into and out of the drum through perforations 11, 16. The perforations 13, 17 disposed forwardly of the scoops serve to drain the channel 8<1> of the liquids. Water is sprayed through perforations 19, 19<1> in a pipe 18 to rinse the material after each operation and is drained off through perforations 20, 20<1>. More than two tanks and solutions may be employed.
