Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO YEAR PLANNERS (71) We, PROGRESSIVE NOTIONS LIMITED, a Jersey Company of The Boulevard, La Roque, Jersey, Channel Islands do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to diary wall charts or plans commercially known as yearplanners. These are normally in the form of a large card or sheet (approximately 90 cm x 60 cm) and printed with spaces representing all the dates, days, weeks and months of a given year and printed accordingly. The spaces for the dates and days of each month generally extend horizontally and the months follow each other vertically one below the other.
The main object of the present invention is to obviate the wasteful destruction or discarding of the planner at the end of each year and to enable users to commence planning from any month that suits their requirements, e.g. fiscal year or the academic year, or indeed to commence planning any future year.
A further object is to make a single chart convenient for continuing over one year to the next where normally, to do this, two charts are in use at the same time.
According to the invention we provide a year planner comprising a wall chart printed with a vertical set of spaces and horizontal set of spaces one set serving for days and the other set serving for months; a plurality of date strips printed with the days of the month and having a wipe-off writing surface, and means whereby the strips can be detachably mounted on the chart, the size of each strip (or combination of strips) for a month corresponding to that part of the chart which represents a month. The chart may have 12 horizontal month spaces and 37 vertical day spaces.
Thus each date strip can be affixed to the chart with the number '1' on the strip below the name of the day of the week on which the particular month starts. As the chart is printed with 37 vertical day spaces, all other dates on the strip will correctly correspond with the remaining days of the month no matter how many days in that month. At the end of the first month of the user's year, that month's strip is lifted off the chart and re-positioned so that number '1' aligns with the day which that month commences in the following year. This action is repeated at the end of each month as the year proceeds.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying diagrammatic drawing wherein:- FIGURE 1 is a view of part of a chart; FIGURE 2 is a view of part of one date strip; FIGURE 3 is a view of part of another such strip; and FIGURE 4 shows a modification.
The chart 10 is ruled with 37 vertical spaces by lines 11 each of which spaces is titled with days of the week (Monday-Sunday five times plus an extra Monday, Tuesday) and with lines 12 for 12 horizontal spaces.
The names of the months are applied to the chart with self-adhesive labels 13 in a vertical column 14; for convenience a similar column is repeated on the right side of the chart.
Twelve date strips are provided - one for each month of the year.
Two strips are shown in Figures 2 and 3 respectively. The strips are identical except that they are printed with different month names.
Each strip 15 in this example has a space 16 for the name of the month and sufficient spaces 17 for the number of days in the month (e.g. January = 31 spaces, February = 29 spaces, April = 30 spaces).
Each strip may be made of stiff flexible material like thin board or plastcs and provided on the front side with a wipe-off surface so that written notes for one month can be wiped off to leave the strip ready for use for the same month next year. The surface of the strip may also be suitable for use with self-adhesive and plastics labels which can he affixed and removed as required without causing damage. The underside of the strip is provided with a lift off adhesive so that it can be affixed to the chart 10 and remain as long as needed but can be lifted off and re-positioned as required.
Thus at the end of January, the January date strip can be lifted off the chart and adjusted horizontally so that the number '1' is under the appropriate name of the day of the week for the following year. For user convenience self adhesive labels 13 with the names of the months aore applied in the column 14 to correspond with the appropriately titled date strip 15. As the date strips and sell-adhesive month labels can be applied to the chart in any required order, the planner can start with any month convenient to the user.
Although stiff material is preferred for the strips they could be made of roll-up transparent film type material.
The kind of lift-off adhesive is well known as light-tack double-sided adhesive tape and/ or "Post-it strip".
Normally the date-strips will be made of opaque material to prevent the rays of the sun from ageing the adhesive but transparent strips may be used if desired.
The chart may be printed in various ways, e.g. with horizontal lines to divide off the different days and weeks from each other and vertical lines to divide off the different months.
Each date strip normally has a depth corresponding to the depth of any one of the 12 horizontal month columns on the chart but if desired strips of double depth can be used - thus providing more planning space per day, albeit over a shorter (6 months) period of time.
It will be appreciated that it is never necessary to write anything on the chart and this may be made of a suitable material for permanent use or at least for many years and may be framed.
Instead of providing the strips with lift-off adhesive, other means may be provided for detachably mounting the date strips on the chart. For example as shown in Figures 1 and 4 channel shaped strips 20 of plastics material may be permanently fixed to the chart into which the date strips may be removably placed and held firmly in position.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A year planner comprising a wall chart printed with a vertical set of spaces and horizontal set of spaces one set serving for days and the other set serving for months; a plurality of date strips printed with the days of the month and having a wipe-off writing surface, and means whereby the strips can be detachably mounted on the chart, the size of each strip (or combination of strips) for a month corresponding to that part of the chart which represents a month.
2. A year planner as claimed in Claim 1 having strips of material fixed to the chart to form channels to receive the date strips removably.
3. A year planner substantially as described and substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

Each strip may be made of stiff flexible material like thin board or plastcs and provided on the front side with a wipe-off surface so that written notes for one month can be wiped off to leave the strip ready for use for the same month next year.

  2. 2. A year planner as claimed in Claim 1 having strips of material fixed to the chart to form channels to receive the date strips removably.
  3. 3. A year planner substantially as described and substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
