Abstract

156,524. Heinicke, H. Jan. 17, 1916, [Convention date]. Explosive gases, detecting.-In apparatus for detecting explosive gases wherein two heated wires 1, 2 of small section and with a high temperature-coefficient are arranged in opposite branches of a Wheatstone bridge and indicate the nature of the surrounding gases by changes of resistance due to the conductivitv of heat of the gases, the third and fourth branches of the bridge are so arranged as to have approximately the same temperature-coefficient as the first-named branches so as to eliminate the effects of external temperature variations. The third and fourth branches may comprise coils 4, 6 of metal having a low temperature-coefficient and coils 3, 5 of metal having a high temperature-coefficent: the coils 3, 5 and wires 1, 2 may be of the same metal. The current is regulated by a resistance 15 and voltmeter 16 and the induction is given by either of two scales on a galvanometer 25 according to the position of a cross-over switch 17 which puts a resistance 24 in or out of circuit.
