Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO A LITHOGRAPHIC PRINTING PROCESS AND PRINTED PRODUCT RESULTING THEREFROM (71) We, IDEGRAF, 28 Route de Chancy, 1213 Petit Chancy, 2 Geneva, Switzerland, a body corporate organised and existing under the Laws of Switzerland, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention has for its object the use of a novel final image support for the application of a lithographic printing process.
Since the invention of lithography, at the end of the eighteenth century, paper has been commonly in this reproduction process as the final image support.
Original lithographic art. which has regained favour in the past few years, has, itself, always been effected on paper.
Lithographies thus created have a wellknown characteristic and a particular presentation since they often comprise engraved or embossed borders. They are generally of limited edition with each example being numbered and signed by the artist in the lower margin and with pencil.
The inventor has found that, contrary to all accepted ideas, linen, commonly used by artists, constitutes an excellent final image support for lithographic printing in black or in colours, and that this support can readily be printed upon by commonly used lithographic presses.
The printed linen can advantageously receive one or more layers of varnish, while on the lithographic press or after removal therefrom, this varnish having a dual aim, namely to make the ink shine or glisten and to protect the printing from the harmful effects of the sun's rays. The printed linen may be initially primed before being varnished.
The printed and varnished linen can then be mounted on a frame, or adhered to a suitable carrier.
The product thus obtained presents an aspect very different from lithography on paper, much closer to oil-painting on linen, while having a truly authentic and original character which colour reproductions of works of art, which are produced by photographic means and which are not personally signed by the artist, do not have.
Lithographies on linen due to their nature and because they are mounted on frames and are varnished do not require protection by glass.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A lithographic printing process comprising the step of printing on linen which serves as the final image support.
2. A process according to Claim 1 comprising the step of applying to the printed linen one or more layers of varnish.
3. A process according to claim 2 comprising the step of priming the printed linen prior to varnishing.
4. A printed product obtained by the process of Claim 1 or 2 or 3.
5. A printed product as claimed in Claim 4 mounted on a frame or adhered to any other carrier.
