Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO PALLETS (71) We, H. J. HEINZ COMPANY LIMITED, a Company incorporated under the Laws of Great Britain, of Hayes Park, Hayes, Middlesex UB4 8AL, England, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to pallets of the kind used for carrying a stack of goods to be transported and which can be engaged by the fork of a fork-lift truck.
In particular the invention relates to an improved two-section pallet of the kintl comprising an expendable section on which goods are shipped and a heavy duty base on which the expendable section is seated, the base being for engagement by the fork of a fork-lift truck or other lifting device.
It is a main object of the present inven- tion to provide an improved two-section pallet on which foodstuffs in cans, packets or glass containers can be stacked for transporting.
According to the invention there is provided a two-section pallet comprising a disposable platform for carrying a stack of goods to be transported, which platform has downwardly extending feet, and a strengthening base shaped to be engaged by the fork of a fork-lift truck, which base has open-ended apertures extending through its depth, in which apertures the feet on the platform fit.
The platform is disposable and is used for one trip only when the stack of goods is shipped to the customer and the high strength base section remains on the warehouse premises.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the feet are tubular supports fixed to the undersurface of the platform. and the base is of a moulded high-strength plastics material formed with said open-ended apertures in which the tubular feet fit and with two parallel passages for receiving the prongs of a lifting fork.
The platform may have one central foot which fits into a central aperture in the base, and a number of peripheral feet which fit into corresponding recesses in the edge of the base.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a twosection pallet according to the invention with a disposable platform shown located above a base.
A two-section pallet according to the invention comprises a disposable platform 1 for example of fibre board sheet for carrying a stack of goods to be transported for example foodstuffs in cans, packets or glass containers. The platform 1 has downwardly extending feet which in this embodiment are tubular fibre board twist supports fixed to the undersurface of the platform. There is a central tubular support 2 and a number of peripheral tubular supports 3 which are spaced around the periphery of the base there being one support at each corner and one halfway along each side of the platform.
The platform fits onto a base 4, for example of moulded high-strength plastics material. The base 4 is moulded with two parallel passages 5 which extend horizontally through the base and are open at both ends, for receiving the prongs of a lifting fork of a fork-lift truck. The prongs may enter the passages from either side of the base 4.
The base is also moulded with openended apertures in which the feet 2 and 3 fit. The base has a central aperture 6 which extends through the depth of the base between the two passages 5 and in which the central foot 2 fits. Around the periphery of the base 4 are apertures 7 in the form of recesses in the edge of the base and the peripheral tubular supports 3 fit into these recesses. The shaped base 4 thus acts as a matrix for the platform and the close fit of the tubular supports 2 and 3 into the central aperture 6 and the recesses 7 in the base ensure that the base lends strength to the platform.
The overall dimensions of the two-section pallet are to suit any particular requirement.
In one embodiment the overall dimensions are 1-2 m to 10 m and the platform 1 has sufficient strength to carry a load of stacked goods up to 15 tonnes in weight while the base 4 provides additional compressive strength sufficient to enable the loaded pallets to be stacked four pallets high in the warehouse.
In operation the base 4 is removed by placing it on a jig which allows the base to drop free of the platform 1 when the fork of the truck is removed or lowered.
Alternatively, with appropriate design of the feet on the platform and the apertures in the base, the base can be removed by withdrawing it forwardly from under the platform when the feet on the platform are resting on a level surface.
The upper section of the pallet is thus a low cast disposable platform which is used to move the product from the warehouse to the customer while the higher cost strengthening base section of the pallet remains on the warehouse premises.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A two-section pallet comprising a disposable platform for carrying a stack of goods to be transported, which platform has downwardly extending feet, and a strengthening base shaped to be engaged by the fork of a fork-lift truck, which base has open-ended apertures extending through its depth, in which apertures the feet on the platform fit.
2. A pallet according to Claim 1, wherein the feet are tubular supports fixed to the undersurface of the platform, and the base is of a moulded high-strength plastics material formed with said open-ended apertures in which the tubular feet fit and with two parallel passages for receiving the prongs of a lifting fork.
3. A pallet according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the platform has one central foot which fits into a central aperture in the base, and a number of peripheral feet which fit into corresponding recesses in the edge of the base.
4. A two-section pallet substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

The overall dimensions of the two-section pallet are to suit any particular requirement. 3. A pallet according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the platform has one central foot which fits into a central aperture in the base, and a number of peripheral feet which fit into corresponding recesses in the edge of the base.
4. A two-section pallet substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
