Description

(54) SECURING DEVICE FOR SHUTTERING (71) We, GIBB & SINCLAIR (JOINERS) LIMITED, a British Company, of Reema Road, Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Great Britain, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to securing shuttering used. for example, in the forming of concrete columns.
Hitherto, one method of securing such shuttering was by means of a steel band which was wrapped around the shuttering.
To remove the shuttering from the column it was necessary to cut the band which was then discarded. In another method interconnected steel rods were used but this system was limited to square columns.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the disadvantages of hitherto known devices.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a device for securing shuttering, comprising an L-shaped member having first and second legs for engaging shuttering on faces thereof meeting at a corner, a flexible elongate tensile member secured at one end of the free end of the first leg. a sleeve secured alongside the second leg, a screw-threaded rod slidably received within the sleeve, means on one end of the rod remote from the first leg for releasably fastening to the flexible elongate tensile member, and a nut screwed onto the other end of the rod adjacent to the first leg for tightening purposes.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a method for securing shuttering using the above device, comprising engaging the first and second legs of the L-shaped member on faces of the shuttering meeting at a corner, girdling the shuttering with the flexible elongate tensile member and fastening the latter to the said means, and tightening the flexible elongate tensile member by turning the nut on the rod.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which show, in plan, a securing device made in accordance with the present invention and securing shuttering around a square column.
Referring to the drawing, a securing device, shown generally at 1, comprises an L-shaped member 2 having first and second legs engaging shuttering 11 surrounding a column 10 at faces thereof meeting at a corner. A flexible elongate tensile member in the form of a chain 7 has one end secured to the free end 21 of the first leg of the L-shaped member 2. A sleeve 3 is secured alongside the second leg of the member 2 and slidably receives a screw-threaded rod 4. A hook 5 is provided on one end of the rod 4 remote from the first leg of the member 2 and a nut 6 is screwed onto the other end of the rod 4 adjacent to the first leg.
In use, the first and second legs of the member 2 are brought into engagement with faces of the shuttering 11 meeting at a corner, the chain 7 is passed around the shuttering so as to girdle same and a selected link is engaged over the hook 5 leaving the remainder 7a of the chain 7 hanging free. The chain is then tightened by turning the nut 6 on the rod 4.
In this way, a great number of different shuttering arrangements may be secured economically and efficiently using a number of devices of the same design.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A device for securing shuttering, comprising an L-shaped member having first and second legs for engaging shuttering on faces thereof meeting at a corner, a flexible elongate tensile member secured at one end to the free end of the first leg, a sleeve secured alongside the second leg, a
