Abstract

155,853. Burgoyne, E. T. March 20, 1918. Self-driving machines. - Automobiles and bicycles are driven by compressed air and turbines on the wheels, the pressure of the air being maintained by the vibration of the vehicle and its momentum when running downhill &c. Fig. 1 shows the application of the invention to a bicycle. The vibration of the saddle 1 actuates a pump 6 which maintains the pressure of the air in a container 10, which supplies air by pipes 11, 15 to a turbine 16 on the back wheel and also to another on the front wheel if desired. The axle of the front wheel may carry an eccentric 18 which actuates a pump 21 for assisting in maintaining the pressure of the air in the container 10. In the case of a motor-car, the pumps are operated by the vibration of the leaf springs supporting the body of the car.
