Digging and channelling apparatus; endlesschain machines. - A machine for excavating trenches with sloping walls comprises a chain of buckets carried by a bucket arm, and rotating conical cutting drums arranged at both sides of the bucket arm. In the form shown, the machine frame b is supported on endless tracks a and a bucket arm c, supporting a chain f carrying buckets m, is pivoted thereto. At the rear of the bucket arm is a shaft h carrying conical drums d provided with cutters i, k, l, the cutters k extending approximately to .the path of the buckets m; the drums carry detachable projections e which engage the bucket chain. Vertically adjustable, spring-mounted rolls p at the rear of the frame b and rolls r carried by a shaft s adjustable along the bucket arm support auxiliary supports and press the edges of the trench and may carry cutting disks t which ensure subsidence of the projecting earth n left by the drums; the rolls p, r may be transversely adjustable. The buckets m deliver at will to either or both of two laterallyextending conveyers which deposit the earth on the sides of the trench. To vary the slope of the trench walls, auxiliary cones may be attached to the drums d. For transport, the bucket chain mav be removed and the bucket arm detached from the frame b and provided with shafts for haulage, the drums d, after removal of the cutters &c., then acting as wheels, or other wheels being provided.
