Abstract

155,756. Krupp Akt.-Ges. Germaniawerft, F. July 15, 1918, [Convention date]. Loading-appliances.-Relates to pneumatic ammunition hoists of the kind having a charging tube F which can be swung beneath a hoisting tube A, and consists in employing the pneumatic pressure to force the charging tube against the hoisting tube to make a tight joint. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, two charging tubes F are loosely mounted on horizontal trunnions f<1> on a frame D which is adapted to swing on a vertical axis E to bring one or other of the tubes F beneath the tube A. On raising the controlling piston-valve L against the action of a spring T, air under pressure from a reservoir P first passes by pipes 7, 1 to a cylinder J to admit pressure below a ram H to force the tube flanges a', f<2> into contact and form a tight connexion between the pipes 5, 5<1> which supply air beneath the hoisting piston G. As the valve L is further raised, the air passes by pipes 6, 5, 5<1> to the space below the hoisting piston G to force the ammunition upwards through the tube A. When the unloading position is reached, air is exhausted through a slot a', the piston comes to rest on a stop lever 0, and a lever M is meanwhile rocked to open a valve N to admit pressure by pipes 3, 4 to the space above the valve L. The resulting downward movement of the valve L allows the cylinder J to exhaust through pipes 2, 8 and cuts off the pressure supply to the tube A. On operating the lever 0, the piston G falls by gravity and the air imprisoned in the tube F brings it gently to rest. A modified arrangement is described in which the valve L is replaced by a number of valves operated in succession by cams to ensure the desired sequence of operations.
