Abstract

Cylinders, hollow. - Relates to rotary internally cooled drums upon which emulsions &c. are spread in films and removed by a scraper when solidified, the drums 1 being of the type provided with annular or longitudinal strengthening-ribs 2, 3. According to the invention, an inner cylindrical wall 6 is formed or provided with parts extending into the spaces formed by the ribs, so that the passage 14 for the cooling- medium is shallower than the ribs, whereby the transfer of heat is facilitated. The wall may be an integral drum with recesses, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or may be formed of separate parts of metal or wood, either solid or hollow, surrounding an inner drum, or the wall may consist of segments 6, Fig. 5, located between the ribs. At the inlet end a plate 19 closes the space between these segments and an inner separate drum 18, but at the discharge end the cooling-liquid has access to it. The inner drum 18 reduces the capacity of the main drum so that no large volume of liquid may accumulate in the interior due to leakage past the joints between the ribs and the parts 6. The annular ribs may be perforated, as shown at 21, to provide a direct passage along the drum. The invention may be applied to drums having helical or meandering ribs.
