Abstract

A process for the concentration of hepatitis B antigen (HBsAg) from clarified plasma of a human hepatitis donor is described. In this process, the clarified plasma is subjected to ultracentrifugation with isopycnic band formation in a sodium bromide density gradient, the sodium salt of the HBsAg being formed. A fraction is obtained from this which contains the enriched HBsAg. This fraction can be subjected to a zonal ultracentrifugation step, a salt of the HBsAg being formed when using a salt density gradient and a complex of the HBsAg being formed when using a non-salt density gradient. In this way, purified HBsAg can be prepared. The products obtained by the process according to the invention can be employed as a preventive vaccine or for the production of a vaccine against hepatitis B.
