Abstract

Retaining walls and dams. -In walls and like structures formed of precast arched beams or blocks of reinforced concrete laid one above another, the reinforcements project at the ends, Fig. 1, and are embedded in the concrete filling forming the haunches. The beams are of I. or T-section, the flanges being connected by a perforated single or multiple web or by struts and ties. The spaces between the webs may be filled if desired. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the beams are made with two haunches E and a valley H to suit asymmetrical loading; or there may be two or more valleys with arches between them. For retaining walls, silos or bunkers, dams, tanks, &c. built vertically or inclined to the horizontal, the beams, Fig. 15, are laid to engage the counterforts z. Intermediate platforms may be built into the walls to relieve the pressure on the inner face. For structures exposed to pressure on either side, the beams are lenticular, Fig. 17, and may have end flanges F which constitute a pillar G having a reinforcedconcrete filling. The cavities H may be left empty for ventilation or be filled with concrete.
