Abstract

The mechanical seal, which is suitable, in particular, for oil-burner pumps, has a metal mating ring (5) with ground score marks (20) which have a unidirectional inclination relative to the radial direction and, in operation, pump back leakage oil. The sealing surface (19) of the mating ring (5) is provided with a thin phosphate layer. During interaction with a rotating slip ring made of carbon, any unevenness is eliminated in operation by the continuous abrasion of the parts resting against one another while the pumping action of the ground score marks is retained. The seal is effective even when the pump is stationary. The design of the score marks as ground score marks on one face of the mating ring (5) results in a simple and inexpensive manufacturing process. <IMAGE>
