Abstract
155,087. Fine Cotton Spinners' & Doubler's Association, Balls, W. L., and Hutchins, F. Oct. 30, 1919. Addition to 119,693. Fibres, separating and sorting. - A handoperated device of the kind described in the parent Specification, which can be used for grading small samples of fibre according to length, comprises a pair of delivery rollers C, C<1>, Figs. 1 and 5, operated through gearing e<2> from a pair of driving-wheels E which rotate as the device is moved along the flat plush collecting-surface G. The feed rollers A - - A<3> are carried in a frame D, which is pivoted on a stay-bar b of the frame carrying the delivery rollers and can oscillate to carry the feed rollers to and from the delivery rollers. The roller A<3> is pressed by a spring F against the first feed roller. The roller A<1> is carried in slots in the frame and the :roller A<2> is carried by an auxiliary frame D<2> pivoted at d. As the device is moved along the surface G, the rollers C, C<1> deliver the tuft of fibres received from the rollers A, A<2> and position them on the surface according to their length. At the end of the traverse, a pin M on the frame D enters a slot k in a cam K, Fig. 8, rotating with one of the gears e<2> driving the auxiliary rollers. This allows the frame D to move forward and brings the feed rollers near to the delivery rollers. It also stops rotation of the delivery rollers. Before repeating the traverse along the surface G, the frame D is lifted by a spring controlled handle H' and the pin M is removed from the slot in the cam. A spring detent K<1> is moved to cover partially the slot k and prevent the return of the frame. When the handle is released it rotates the feed rollers through a pawl and ratchet arrangement to pass forward a new tuft of fibres. The delivery roller C<1> is pressed against the roller C by a, spring frame controlled by a cam lever G<1>. The feed rollers A are set slightly apart from one another so that the fibres can be drawn through them by the delivery rollers, and they are prevented from rotating whilst this is being done by a locking-pawl on the operating ratchet.
