Abstract

Ink ribbons. - Relates to office machines for making ink ribbons, of the kind that comprise ribbon-inking means, rollers for squeezing-out surplus ink, and a rotatable holder for the winding-spool. In the machine shown in Figs. 3 and 8, the ribbon 21 passes from a roll 20 and is guided by a grooved roller 31 to squeezing- rollers 29, 30 which are formed with a groove 33 and rib 34, the ribbon lying in the groove and being pressed by the rib. Preferably, the sides of the rib are tapered and do not fit closely the sides of the groove. The roller 29 is carried by levers 51 drawn downwards by springs 52. The inking-means consists of a vessel 37 and a roller 36, preferable roughened, which is carried by levers 44 and is pressed against the bottom of the groove 33 by a spring 42, adjustable by a nut 45. The vessel 37 may be supported by a detachable shelf 38. The winding-spool 53 is mounted between centres consisting of a spindle 69. Fig. 8, geared to the roller 30, and a threaded plug 71 which can be inserted or withdrawn by means of a handle 73. The spindle 69 is coupled to the spool by a friction coupling which can be employed with different types of ribbon-spool and consists of a plate 76 having a series of openings for receiving a pin 77 which can engage any opening or projection in or on the spool flange; a disc 75 on the spindle drives the disc 76 bv means of a friction surface 78 carried by either of the discs. The ribbon is tensioned and held when cut, bv means of a spring clip 55 which holds the ribbon in contact with a rod 54. The roller 30 is driven bv a hand-crank which is adapted to ring a bell when a ribbon-length has been wound off the roll; for this purpose, the crank is provided with a tooth for actuating a pinion which is provided with a pin for actuating the bell-hammer. A detent is provided for preventing reverse rotation of the crank. The machine may be modified for making two-colour ribbons by replacing the roller 36 by two rollers which dip into separate ink vessels and are divided by a plate. The ribbon may be inked directly by a roller which is geared to the roller 30. In the machine shown in Fig. 13, the ink-vessel 35<3> is arranged above the rollers 29, 30 and ink is transferred bv a positivelydriven roller 36<3>, a scraper 83 being provided for cleaning the roller 29 and diverting leakage away from the ribbon. The machine shown in Fig. 13 can be modified for making two-colour ribbons by providing separate ink vessels and' rollers.
