Abstract

The reaction according to the parent patent, between a monosaccharide A-OH and an organic halide Y-X with the formation of a monosaccharide ether A-O-Y, is carried out with a high yield and a high purity when the procedure is carried out in the presence of a strong and solid, substantially anhydrous inorganic base, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal. The compounds obtained can be used as antiviral agents with a broad activity spectrum, especially against both RNA and DNA type viruses.
