Abstract

154,283. British United Shoe Machinery Co., (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Aug. 8, 1919. Periodic.-In clutch and brake mechanism for use with presses for cutting out parts of boots and shoes, a rod 52 connected directly to the clutch lever 22 and by a lever 50 to a brake-operating rod 38 is actuated by a lever 56 moved in one direction to engage the clutch and release the brake for starting by a spring 66 and in the opposite direction to stop the machine by a ratchet-like camwheel 60 secured on a spindle 68 to which is secured a ratchet-wheel 80 adapted to be rotated by a pawl 88 on an arm 86 operated by the treadle 96 and also by a pawl 116 on a bracket 114 secured to one of several rods 8 moving with the platen, which is operated from the shaft 16 by eccentrics. The treadle is connected to the arm 86 by an adjustable link 100 carrying adjustable stop-nuts 108, 112 for engaging a lug 110 on the frame so to limit the stroke of the pawl 88 that pressure on the treadle brings a recess 62 in the cam 60 under a roller 58 on the lever 56, so that the rod 52 is actuated for starting. The platen is thus lowered and on rising, the pawl 116 rotates the ratchet-wheel 80 another step and a lug 64 on the cam 60 raises the lever 56 and stops the machine. The brake rod 38 is spring connected to a lever 34, which is pivoted on one end of the brake band 26 and is connected by a link 36 to the other end. The brake band is secured to a shoe 32 which is anchored by a link 28 to a fixed point 30. The brake drum 24 is mounted eccentrically on the shaft 16, so that the brake action automatically increases as the platen nears the top of its stroke. To prevent accidental rotation of the ratchet-wheel 80, it is normally locked by a roller 122 carried in a ratchet-wheel 82 and engaging with an incline 120 on the wheel 80 and with an adjustable stationary sleeve 72 surrounding the shaft 68. Springs 124 connecting the wheels 80, 82 maintain the roller 122 normally so placed that forward motion of the wheel 80 is prevented. The pawls 88, 116 first move forward the wheel 82, so as to release the hold of the roller 122, and then rotate the wheel 80.
