Abstract

In order to prepare the foam containing bonded protein, first, in the absence of water, a solution of the protein in liquid polyurethane prepolymer containing terminal isocyanate groups is prepared, and the resultant solution is then foamed by admixing water. The resultant foam contains from 0.1 to 50% by weight of the added, active protein preparation on a water-free (anhydrous) basis. It has a hydrophillic poly(urea-urethane) foam matrix. The protein employed can be an enzyme, an antibody or an antigen. The foam with the immobilised protein can be used for carrying out various biological reactions. For example, the foam can contain, as antibody, the bonded hepatitis antibody and can be used to separate the hepatitis antigen from human blood. By correspondingly immobilising the immunoglobulin G, the rheumatic arthritis factor can also be removed from human blood.
