Abstract

1536291 Leak testing UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 8 Sept 1977 [9 Sept 1976] 37509/76 Heading G1S A nuclear reactor 2 (particularly a gas-cooled reactor) has a reactor coolant flowing in a primary circuit 3 which is linked by a heat exchanger 8 with a secondary circuit 5 operating with a fluid at a higher pressure than the primary circuit and to which is added a gas capable of forming a radioactive isotope under irradiation in the reactor. A detector means such as a gamma-spectrometer 18 is used to detect the presence of the radio-active isotope in the primary circuit, thereby detecting any leakage between secondary and primary circuits. The reactor coolant and the secondary fluid are preferably identical gases, e.g. helium, and the added gas a small percentage of argon. The secondary circuit 5 may be linked by heat exchanger 9 to a tertiary circuit 4 forming part of a process for which the reactor supplies the heat.
