1536074 Castors WILHELM KUWERTZ 12 Sept 1977 [28 Sept 1976 10 Dec 1976 11 May 1977] 37993/77 Heading A4U A castor comprises a carrier 1 pivotably mounted on a pivot 4 fixed to an article of furniture, the carrier having slidably mounted in it a spring-biased bearing 8 carrying an axle 17 which supports rollers 18, 19, and having fixed brake shoes 22, 23 for engaging the roller flanges 20, 21 when the castor is unloaded but which are disengaged from the rollers when the bearing is moved against the bias of its spring 9 upon loading of the castor. The spring may be a block of resilient material or a helical compression spring or concentric springs giving a variable rate. Pins 11a, 12a retain the bearing 8 and the spring 9 in the carrier 1. A knife edge 15 removes dirt. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown), an arcuate guard plate (30) is provided and the brake shoes 22, 23 engage the hubs of the rollers. In a third embodiment, Figs. 7 to 9 (not shown), the spring is adjustable by a screw 41 and the adjustment may be indexed. In a fourth embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), concentric springs 9, 47 are spaced by a resilient tube (48).
