Abstract

1536071 Controlling variable displacement pumps CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 6 Sept 1977 [24 Feb 1977] 37147/77 Heading G3P One or more variable displacement pumps 10, 12 driven by a single prime mover 16 are controlled by a system comprising load sensing means 62 receiving pilot fluid from a fixed displacement pump 30 driven by the prime mover 16 and producing a signal proportional to the load on the pumps 10, 12, which is fed to the inlet 50 of an underspeed control valve 44 which is connected to the pilot pump 30 so as to be responsive to the speed of the prime mover, the outlet 52 of the valve 44 being connected to actuators 14 controlling the displacement of the pumps. The actuators 14 maintain the pumps at maximum displacement unless the signal received by them exceeds a predetermined level. If the pumps are overloaded, then the signal from the means 62 will increase, and the decreased pressure drops across orifices 40, 42 caused by the fall in prime mover speed will bias the valve 44 to pass an increased proportion of this signal so that pump displacement is reduced. If however there is a fall in prime mover speed that is not cause by an overload, then the proportion of the signal from the means 62 passed by the valve 44 will still be increased, but this will not be sufficient to reduce pump displacement.
