Abstract

1535867 Seat belts BRITAX (WINGARD) Ltd 23 May 1977 [24 May 1976] 21397/76 Heading A3V A seat belt retractor comprises a reel to store the belt, means e.g. a spring which is biassed or tensioned to retract an extended belt, friction means to diminish the bias exerted by the retraction means when the belt is being worn and means to decouple the friction means from the retraction means to fully restore the retraction force. As shown a spring biassed belt reel is connected to a gear 1 drivingly connected with a worm gear 3. When the belt is pulled out gear 1 rotates anticlockwise and moves gear 3 to the left until its shaft is supported by indent 6 whereafter gear 3 is rotated thus rotating a threaded shaft 9 along which a nut 8 held against rotation is driven. At full retraction nut 8 is closely adjacent a flange 7 on gear 3. With the slight retraction associated with fitting the belt gear 1 rotates clockwise to shift flange 7 of gear 3 into contact with nut 8. Further retraction then involves a frictional drag force caused by flange 7 bearing against nut 8. This continues until gear 3 has moved so far to the right that the end 11 of shaft 9 engages the end of the blind hole 10 and nut 8 then moves away from flange 7, the frictional force thus being removed for the remainder of the retraction.
