Abstract

1423000 Vehicle harness reels SOC ANON FRANCAISE DU FERODO 23 March 1973 [20 March 1973] 14225/73 Heading A3V A vehicle safety belt reel comprises a frame in the form of a plate 10 having side flanges 12, 13 housing a rotary shaft 16 to which one end of the belt (not shown) is attached, the shaft 16 being subjected to the action of a return spring 28 tending to wind in the belt, and a wheel 50 mounted on the shaft 16 for rotation therewith and for axial movement relative thereto, the wheel, having thereon locking teeth 54 for cooperation with teeth 41 on the flange 12 so as to lock the reel against belt withdrawal, a pivotally mounted finger 46 being interposed between the wheel 50 and flange 12 to hold the teeth 54, 41 out of engagement against the action of a spring 58 during initial belt withdrawal, subsequent relaxation in the tension of the withdrawn belt allowing cam teeth 55 on the wheel 50 to push the finger 46 clear of the wheel allowing it to move axially and causing mutual engagement between the teeth 54, 41 to lock the reel. The cam teeth 55 allow rotation of the shaft 16 in the direction of belt withdrawal without displacement of the finger 46 from the position shown in Figure 3 into which it is urged by a spring 47, but rotation in the opposite direction causes the faces 70 of the cam teeth to engage the face 71 of the finger 46 to pivot it clear of the wheel 50. An extension 21 of the shaft 16 is screw-threaded and mounted thereon is a non-rotating nut 56 which therefore moves axially on the extension 21 as the belt is wound-in and withdrawn and serves to draw the wheel teeth 54 clear of the fixed teeth 41 by engagement with a flange 57 to unlock the reel when the belt is nearly wound in. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the wheel 50 is coupled to a manually withdrawable button projecting outside the reel housing to unlock the reel when desired, the button further being rotatable through an arc to lock the shaft 16 against rotation in either direction.
