Abstract

1535726 Surface inspection system FERRANTI Ltd 23 Feb 1976 [27 Feb 1975 27 March 1975] 8168/75 and 13109/75 Heading G1A A surface inspection system includes a repetitive light beam scanner, photo-cell 16 producing signals dependent on the intensity of light received from the surface and an equalization circuit 19 comprising detector 23 detecting the peak magnitude of signals from amplifier 21' in each scan to control the mean level of the detector output signal in a subsequent scan, background signal level detector 24 to provide a threshold signal to the input of amplifier 21' so as to remove the background components, and a band-pass filter 25 which compensates for optical gain changes by controlling the signal level from further amplifier 21". The equalization circuit 19 renders the output signal constant except for the (negative) spikes due to surface faults. Detector 23 acts by controlling photo-multiplier power supply 20. To eliminate D.C. components a high pass filter 26 may be located in one or more of the places shown. There may be a plurality of photo-cells (15'), each viewing a different part of the surface as in the scanning station of Fig. 3 (not shown), with output summing means. A diffuser (17') may be anisotropic. Alternatively Fig. 4 (not shown) the detectors may have individual equalization circuits and one in common.
