Abstract

1535574 Grafted polysaccharides HERCULES Inc 25 Oct 1976 [23 Oct 1975] 44238/76 Heading C3P A graft polymer based on a polysaccharide comprises a water-wettable host polysaccharide such as cellulose, oxidized cellulose, starch or guar gum having substantially inseparably associated therewith a crosslinked synthetic polymer of acrylamide and at least one other water-soluble vinyl monomer, e.g. sodium acrylate, the host polysaccharide comprising 10-60 wt. per cent of the total mass. The material is prepared by reacting a waterwettable polysaccharide material simultaneously with acrylamide or methacrylamide, at least one other water-soluble vinyl monomer and a water-soluble divinyl monomer, e.g. methylene bis-acrylamide, in the presence of a free radical catalyst system, the reaction being carried out in a reaction medium comprising a water-immiscible inert organic liquid having dispersed therein 1À25-2À5 times the weight of reactants of a low-boiling, water-miscible organic liquid having a low chain transfer constant under the reaction conditions in an amount of 25-65 vol. per cent of the inert diluent.
