Abstract
1535163 Bearing control system ALFRED HERBERT Ltd 25 Nov 1975 [3 Dec 1974] 52167/74 Heading G3N [Alson in Division F2] A bearing control system for a fluid loadable bearing 1 produces an electrical signal relating to a measured parameter, e.g. shaft speed, which is used to vary the fluid loading on the bearing. Shaft 3 rotates in bearings 1, 2 housed in sleeve 4 which slides axially in body 5 but is prevented from rotation by dowel 6 in slot 7. Hydraulic pressure in chamber 13 varies the position of sleeve 4, and thus the outer element 3a of the bearing 1, in the direction of arrow A and thus varies the loading. The shaft speed is electrically measured by tachometer 16 whose output feeds control device 17 for proportional actuator 18 which controls the pressure valve 19 for chamber 13. Transducer 20 senses the pressure loading, shown on gauge 21, and gives feedback so that the pressure does not exceed a limit. An over-ride can be provided manually or from a numerical controlled machine tool to vary the limit. The parameter may also be load exerted on the bearing by a shaft. Alternatively bearing preload can be varied in accordance with cutting forces on the slide.
