Abstract

1534879 Door handles R CARTWRIGHT & CO Ltd 7 May 1976 [10 May 1975] 19749/75 Heading E2A In an assembly a door handle mounting 10, Fig. 2, and a door handle mounting 12 are mounted on a door 14. The latter has a recess 15 therein which receives a spindle 16 for engaging a latch mechanism (not shown). Each mounting has a housing 24 having a face part 26, a side wall part 28, an aperture 56 for receiving a unitary locking snib 18 therein, and an aperture 22 for a lever hub 32 with a circular portion 36, and a portion 38 with diametrically opposed flats. A circlip 40, in a circumferential groove in the hub 32, retains a washer 42 on the portion 38 of the hub, a non-rotatable backplate 44 and a coil torsion spring 46 which is positioned betwen the back plate 44 and the front face 26 of the housing 24. The rotation of the lever 20 is limited between a first position shown in Fig. 1 and a second position at 60 degrees thereto by a lip 50, Fig. 3 of the back plate 44 and a cut-out 52 of the washer 40. The spring 46 is attached to the hub 32 and to the backplate 44 to bias the lever 20 to the first position. The snib 18 comprises a part 58, Fig. 5, and a cylindrical portion 68 which is receivable in an aperture 69, Fig. 6, of a steel support plate 71, a cylindrical portion 61 and a cam 62, and a hand engageable part 60. The cam 62 has a curved surface 64, Fig. 4, for engaging a cut-out 65, Fig. 3, in the washer 42, and a curved surface 66, Fig. 4. A release recess 72 is formed in the snib 18, Fig. 5, to receive a tool (not shown) which may be passed through a passage 82 in the door 14 to effect rotation of the snib from the other side of the door. In use the lever 20 is rotatable when the snib 18, Fig. 1 is positioned as shown in full lines, the surface 66 of the cam 62 allowing rotation of the washer 42, and the lever 20 is locked when the snib is positioned as shown in interrupted lines, the surface 64 of the cam 62 will be located within the cut-out 65 of the washer 42 to prevent rotation of the latter.
